Bongzilla formed sometime in 1995 in Wisconsin, quickly composing a host of songs inspired by their marijuana. Very little is known about the early years of the band except for their appearances on a host of split and EP releases between 1996 and 1999, the first being Mixed Bag on Rhetoric Records in 1996. Following a split with MeatJack another 7″ EP entitled Hemp For Victory (Named after the vintage educational/propaganda film of the same name) was released on Thunder Lizard. Two more splits followed the same year and eventually Bongzilla was signed to Relapse Records.

The first release on this label was Methods for Attaining Extreme Altitudes released on CD on 27 January 1998. The band at this point made yearly appearances at the Milwaukee Metalfest, notably 1999 and 2000. The band’s debut studio album Stash saw it’s release on 20 April 1999 to positive reviews. A split with Corrupted, Noothgrush and Dystopia entitled Twin Threat To Your Sanity followed.

The band’s second album saw release via Howling Bull America (With a reissue three years later via Relapse). Apogee was released on 11 May 2001 and showcased three new songs along with live recordings from 1998. A compilation of all of the band’s EPs and splits to that point entitled Shake: The Singles saw release the next year. The band’s third album Gateway saw release via Relapse on 3 September 2002.

Amerijuanican and Hiatus (2003 – 2009)

Bongzilla would begin 2003 as part of the Relapse Contamination Festival, with their performance being released as a live album the next year. The band sporadically played shows and tours, with notable appearances at various festivals.

A lineup change prompted one Dixie Dave Collins to join the band as their bassist, leading them to record the band’s fourth album. Amerijuanican was released via Relapse on 27 September 2005 to positive reviews and featured a cover of “Champagne and Reefer” by Muddy Waters. The band toured and remained active until 2009 when the group quietly took a hiatus, their last known show being Forward Fest alongside the likes of Bob Mould, Detroit Cobras and Neko Case to name a few.
Barbarian Records would reissue the Shake compilation as Nuggets in 2007 with three bonus tracks while Relapse would reissue Stash with the Methods for Attaining Extreme Altitudes as bonus tracks.

Return (2015 – Present)|

In April 2015 it was announced Bongzilla was reforming with the Gateway lineup, first announcing a tour of Europe including dates at Heavy Days in Doomtown and Temples Festival along with a single date in NYC. The band followed up with a four-date tour of the West Coast USA, a tour of the east coast USA and an appearance at Desertfest Belgium.

Bongzilla would follow with a tour of the United States alongside Black Cobra, Lo-Pan, Against The Grain and Kings Destroy the next year and make an appearance at Maryland Deathfest. The band toured the USA again that fall with Wizard Rifle and Buzzoven on select dates.

Bongzilla began 2017 with a local show in Wisconsin before embarking on another European tour, playing the likes of Roadburn Festival, DesertFest Berlin, DesertFest London, KrisionFest (Their first ever appearance in Spain) and have begun working on material for a new album. Bongzilla have also set course for a 2018 European tour with Dopethrone and Sons of Otis. Bongzilla would tour and perform several festivals in 2018 and 2019. In late 2018 Totem Cat Records would release a 14 song compilation of the Bongzilla early split / live material under the album name Thank You Marijuana. In early 2020, Bongzilla started their own label called Gungeon Records and released a re-issue of their classic album Apogee.

However, in March of 2020 it would be announced that Cooter Brown would retire from the band due to health and family reasons, with Bongzilla choosing to continue as a thunderous three-piece. During Bongzilla’s first tour as a thunderous three in March of 2020, the tour was cut short due to the coronavirus pandemic. A few months into the pandemic, Bongzilla began rehearsing and recording for several different record projects – A limited Wake Brewing 7 inch, a full length album titled Weedsconsin, an LP split with the band Tons, and a 7 Inch Split with Boris, the first of a 7 inch Split Series released on Gungeon Records. All projects were recorded at Future Apple Tree Studios in Rockford, Illinois in October of 2020 by the legendary John Hopkins before his sudden and unexpected passing in the late fall of 2020.

Bongzilla announced signing to the Italian label – Heavy Psych Sounds on Janurary 21st of 2021. Bongzilla is preparing for the release of their new full length album Weedsconsin, as well as a limited 7 Inch from Wake Brewing, followed by the Bongzilla / Tons Split for the HPS series – Doom Sessions, as well as the 7 inch split with Boris on Gungeon Records.

The Well
A heavy psych rock/proto-metal power trio based out of Austin, Texas, the Well’s lethal blend of knotty prog, punk, and bluesy doom rock invokes names like Black Sabbath, Electric Wizard, Sleep, and Uncle Acid & the Deadbeats. Citing a desire “to blend different musical styles as diversified as Joy Division to Blue Cheer”, the band, which consists of Ian Graham, Lisa Alley, and Jason Sullivan, came together in 2012 out of a shared love for extreme music, cult horror films, and dark mysticism.

Mothership
Supersonic intergalactic heavy rock trio Mothership based out of Dallas, Texas give a real sense of hope that all is well in the universe, and that pure honest rock and roll has once again returned to this planet on a mission to unite true believers. Consisting of brothers Kyle Juett on bass/lead vocals, Kelley Juett on guitar/vocals, and Judge Smith on drums, these guys have created a unique sound that satisfies like a steaming hot stew of UFO and Iron Maiden, blended with the southern swagger of Molly Hatchet and ZZ Top, paired with a deadly chalice of Black Sabbath.

Druids
Formed in 2008, Des Moines, Iowa’s metal trio, Druids, set out to create music that was loud, crushing and beautiful, while painting lush, vast pathways for imaginative soundscapes. With the new album titled “Shadow Work” and a 2022 tour alongside Planet of Zeus, the future looks plentiful and bright for the band.

20 Watt Tombstone
20 Watt Tombstone are Wausau, Wisconsin’s hard-touring death blues saviors. Their sound blends ZZ Top’s tell-tale grit with Kyuss’s mood and timbre. Toss in a little Robert Johnson and Black Flag for some spice, and you have the perfect recipe for dusty, doomy goodness.

Undisputed masters of murderous riffs, pugnacious grooves and ferocious hooks since 1991, Machine Head are long established as one of the most influential and incendiary bands in metal.

From genre-expanding triumphs like 1994’s debut, Burn My Eyes, 1999’s The Burning Red to the planet-conquering might of 2007’s The Blackening, to the new life injected in 2014’s Bloodstone and Diamonds, Machine Head have carved a singular path across the globe for over three decades now with no end in sight. Whether it be marathon 3-hour live performances, or millions of albums sold worldwide, and accolades both big and small, there aren’t too many ‘distractions’ clouding up the vision of guitarist/vocalist/founder Robb Flynn these days.

In 2022, Machine Head are back with their most crushing and complete album yet. ØF KINGDØM AND CRØWN is an hour-long conceptual monolith, rich in colour and dynamics but hell-bent on destruction. Set in a futuristic wasteland where the sky is always crimson red, ØF KINGDØM AND CRØWN tells the tale of two characters, both faced with incalculable trauma, whose stories become bloodily entwined as this deep, dark record progresses.

“The album and concept was loosely inspired by the Japanese anime series Attack On Titan,” says Robb, “in the sense that in that series, there is no “good” or “bad” guy… both sides believe they’re doing the right thing, but both are committing atrocities and evil.”

Album opener, “SLAUGHTER THE MARTYR,” sets the tone for not only the record, but the aural and psychological exploration the listener is about to embark on. From the first dissonant note, its certain this is not only fresh canvas spelled out with lead vocalist Robb Flynn and bassist Jared MacEachern’s soaring vocal harmonies, but its intent is as furious as anything the band has ever come up with. This track also begins the journey of our protagonists.

Further exploration of the damaged psyche blasts forth on “CHØKE ØN THE ASHES ØF YØUR HATE,” a searing back and forth dose of Thrash Metal that could only come from the roots of the Bay Area. Unrelenting in its attack, the breakneck pace only solidifies this as one of many standouts on ØF KINGDØM AND CRØWN.

From the adrenaline rush of exorcising their inner demons to the innate feeling of solitude and regret comes “UNHALLØWED.” A dramatic introspective of questioning one’s motives and the fallout when the debts our expended emotions come to collect. Hopeless, lost, and isolated, protagonist #2 begins the transformation from victim to victimizer over the melodic chaos courtesy of guitarist Vogg Kiełtyka. Radicalized, paranoid, and armed with a dead-end stare, the mental onslaught ignites with the song, “KILL THY ENEMIES.” The whiplash inducing thoughts pair up nicely with some of the thickest grooves on the album.

The album ends with arguably the finest song Machine Head have ever written: “ARRØWS IN WØRDS FRØM THE SKY”, the grandiose but emotionally visceral climax to the finest and most ferocious album of the band’s 30 year career.

A perennially vital force in heavy music, Machine Head have continued their exhilarating evolution, while never losing the furious spirit of their old school, underground roots.

ABOUT LICH KING

Lich King is the ultimate crossover between punk and thrash. Formed back in the early 2000s as a spoof band, they quickly turned the heads of metalheads and punks across the US with their debut album Necromatic Maelstorm, but it wasn’t until their 2012 album Born of The Bomb, that threw them into the forefront of the Neo-Trash/Crossover genre. Their latest album, 2017’s Omniclasm, took them global, touring in support of the monumental album. Successful tours in Asia, South America, and Europe culminated with a powerful US run alongside Exmortus. Now, with the pandemic finally coming to the close, Lich King are back performing a few west coast dates and a couple of festival dates through 2021 and ready to hit the road once again for 2022
