Remain in Night returns for another unforgettable evening of pulsating psychedelic techno. Come explore the rhythms and textures of the night while immersing yourself in a world class VOID sound system.

For this momentous edition we welcome one of the true all-time great heroes of under¬ground techno, Func¬tion. Currently based in Berlin he has been DJing and producing ground breaking influential music for over 25 years. He is a found¬ing mem¬ber of the Sandwell Dis¬trict col¬lec¬tive, Ostgut Ton record¬ing artist, Tresor mainstay, own¬er of Infrastructure, and part of the techno supergroup LSD with Luke Slater and Steve Bicknell. His DJ sets are the stuff of legend, and he will be taking us on an extended 3hr exploration.

Major support from Antenes (L.I.E.S./BUNKER NY) flying in from Brooklyn. She’s our first returning artist to the Remain in Night event series, and it’s no surprise why. Her eclectic DJ sets dive into acid-laced techno, shimmering electro, shadowy atmospheres and beyond.

We also have a very special live set to open the evening from Darkcloud. He’s been a mainstay in the midwest for a long time under his Tunnel moniker, but for this night we’re getting a rare Darkcloud liveset from him to span his take on electro, techno, breaks, and beyond. He also runs the venerable label [webuildmachines].

Join us for another celebration of Willy Street Beats! We’re so incredibly excited to welcome DJ Minx back to Madison after she kinda stole the show last year at Musique Électronique. Looking forward to her being able to spread her wings this year and play the official after party!

___

DJ Minx was inspired to spin at The Music Institute in 1989, where some of Detroit’s leading dance music DJs helped to hone her skills.

For two years she engineered and hosted “Deep Space Radio,” an electronic music show on Detroit’s WGPR radio station. She also voluntarily hosted a weekly radio program at the University of Canada on CJAM 91.5 FM called “Steamy Windows,” and later became a resident of world-renowned Club Motor in Hamtramck. In 2000 she was a featured performer at the first Detroit Electronic Music Festival, and has since become a regular fixture at Movement.

In December 1996 Minx founded Women on Wax, a collective of female DJs from the Metro Detroit area. From then on, she worked with promoters and DJs across the country to solidify the career of several top female DJs and singers.

In 2001, Minx established her own record label called Women On Wax Recordings, which has become a platform for her own productions (including the 2003 classic, “A Walk In The Park”) and outlet for local talent. Minx expanded her musical majesty by creating a sub-imprint of the label called W.O.W. B.A.M. (Women On Wax Bangin’ Ass Music), and continues to collaborate with, produce on, and remix for a number of labels.

Currently Detroit’s “First Lady of Wax” is going strong after nearly three decades of DJing and continues to play in cities across the U.S. and around world. She was recently named one of the “20 Women Who Shaped the History of Dance Music” by Mixmag and one of the “Best house music DJs of all time” by TimeOut New York. In 2018, she was presented with the Spirit of Detroit Award for “exceptional achievement, outstanding leadership and dedication to improving the quality of life”.

Dirtwire

Dirtwire stands poised between ancient Mother Earth and modern technology, a blend of ethnomusicology and the psychedelic trance state, gut-bucket delta blues and what the band variously dubs “back-porch space cowboy blues, swamptronica, and electro-twang.” It’s a sound informed by Dirtwire’s travels and performances around the globe, where East meets West and North joins South. From the favelas in Brazil, Femi Kuti’s Shrine in Lagos, Tokyo’s bluegrass clubs, Ayahuasca ceremonies in Central America, Gamelan performances in Bali, desert festivals in the Australian Outback, and the 20th anniversary of Kazakhstan’s modernized new capital Astana, the band spreads its message by building bridges across musical cultures in their own unique way.

Dirtwire plays an array of instruments both ancient and modern, including West African kamale ngonis, jaw harps, space fiddles, whamola basses, Rickenbacher electric 12 string guitars, bowed Banjos and mouth harps from around the globe, all interwoven into modern laptop beat creation. Hailing from the underground west coast electronic bass music scene Dirtwire finds itself at the forefront of experimental electronic music production mixing in their wide array of world instruments with sampled beats and 808’s. Dirtwire’s live shows are a communal psychedelic journey, ranging from down home boot stomping get downs, to bass and blues electronic mashups, to ethereal cinematic beat driven soundscapes. Woven into each is the exploration of where live instruments meet computer production, and where tradition meets experimentation.

ARTIST BIOS:

LUXURY ELITE || Luxury Elite has released multiple albums and EPs, appeared in numerous magazines and webzines, and performed in multiple URL shows as well as 100% Electronicon. Lux was the founder of the digital label Fortune 500, which became a huge influence for many past and present vaporwave artists and labels. Lux also created the online radio show Neon Nights, using it as a platform to highlight to boost artists in the scene. After playing the biggest show of her life at last year’s 100% Electronicon event, she’s choosing to resurface for a moment in the Dairy State with some new music in tow. Be ready for a weird show!

VAPERROR || VAPERROR (Jeff Cardinal) is a multi-instrumentalist and electronic music producer who made his first splash in the music scene with the classic “Mana Pool” record in 2014. Combining jazz and funk sensibilities with fun, upbeat synthesizers, drum machines and bass guitar, VAPERROR consistently delivers in a wide variety of styles.

FIRE-TOOLZ || Producer / composer / multi-instrumentalist Angel Marcloid records music under the moniker Fire-Toolz. Though Marcloid’s output emerges in many distinct aliases — from the jazz fusion / new age of Nonlocal Forecast to the vapor dreams of MindSpring Memories — the Fire-Toolz catalog remains the central focus of the prolific artist’s musical universe. Fire-Toolz has released five full-lengths on Chicago label Hausu Mountain, including 2021’s Eternal Home and 2023’s I am upset because I see something that is not there, along with an LP on Ohio label Orange Milk, and a wide array of self-released music. The project draws energy from the constant fluctuation between seemingly disparate styles, yet Marcloid pulls off the impossible feat again and again of making chaotic deviations and improbable jump-cuts between ideas sound natural. Bursts of harsh textural noise cut into drifts of new age synth bliss, while miniature screamo verses bookend passages of hyper-technical prog rock. Breakbeats collide with death metal-inspired drum programming into cybernetic spikes of intensity. At times, Marcloid offers us some form of pop music, carried in passages of clean vocals and bright synth tones. Though Fire-Toolz weaves together far-flung elements of Marcloid’s musical upbringing, the project never engages in outright nostalgia. These vocabularies are not relics of the past dusted off and presented as novelties. They’re living traditions that the artist works with in the present tense.

AHERO || Ahero is making breakbeat-infused vaporwave for past, future, and present.

V4NGOE || Originating in 2018 from the DC-Metroarea, V4NGOE is a multi-media project born from the mind of Vincent Vangoe. Hearkening back to the hypnagogic jungle sounds reminiscent of the early Y2K era, V4NGOE is blending tight drum tracks to DIY sample-based pop-infused instrumentals, pairing with authentic and emotional vocals. Inspired by the sounds of electronic projects ESPRIT, Satin Sheets, and NMESH, V4NGOE is painting lush audible landscapes for listeners across the globe.

YUNG SHIRO || Formerly a curator, promoter, and owner of a now defunct music review site, YUNG SHIRO has been mixing various genres of electronic music since 2017. The Steve Aoki of vaporwave, YUNG SHIRO also spins house, bass, and club music, specializing in dancefloor-ready bangers. One half of the Hot Takes podcast and longtime member of the Rosewood collective, YUNG SHIRO has performed at various dance parties like ElectroniCON, Terminally Chill, Vaporspace StL, and Virtual Memory.

SOUND MARKET || Sound Market, aka Paul Dixon, is a multi-instrumentalist, producer and DJ who has been making vaporwave, Drum and Bass, Trap, and House music out of St. Louis Missouri since 2015. Sound Market’s music is characterized by its highly syncopated, rich soundscapes and its use of samples from video games, cell phones and computer operating systems. Sound Market has released several albums, EPs and singles, and has toured in multiple states throughout the USA.

SIMPLE SYRUP || Creating blissfully ethereal sounds and visuals, Simple Syrup is the silky smooth solo project of Columbus, Ohio based artist Josh Chaney. Originating in early 2021 with their debut LP “Make Me Float” releasing on Business Casual, this new-age producer has made waves throughout the internet scene. Simple Syrup pulls inspiration from vaporwave, breakbeats, 90’s r&b, new jack swing, psychedelia, new age ambient music, and hip hop, and blends it all together into one euphoric sound palette. If you want to know what it feels like to fly through cotton candy clouds and blissfully experience the innocence of the 90’s, Simple Syrup has the sounds for you.

LAKEWAVES TRIO || Lakewaves Trio is a Madison-centric, groove-based outfit that crafts celestial originals with an eclectic, progressive, soundscape-y instrumentalism. The Impressionistic, Carter-administration melodicism of Marlowe’s compositions is something of a perfect match for the jazzy, exploratory low end of Mason Aumanstal (“Mamo”) and the breezy, old-school dynamism of Will Bailey’s drums and earthy percussion. With a refreshing blend of musicianship, humor and renty party mystique, their tracks are imagistic and crackle with psychedelia, which sometimes sets an irreverent, Dada-absurdist backdrop for the unusually enjoyable music.

DUNZO DONALDS & LAYERS THOMPSON || Madison producer Layers Thompson melds hip hop, soul, and ambient moods on his new collaboration with Kenosha MC Dunzo Donalds. Their new project is a manifestation of the hope, light, and power we can all find within ourselves.

Join us after the dance tent at Musique Électronique for a special 2 hour set by DJ Bone with local support by DJ Milhouse on a proper VOID soundsystem. Grab a 2-night pass and save some money at the door!

DJ Bone

As the guys at Fabric put it, it’s pretty hard to talk about Detroit’s DJ Bone without using the word ‘underground’. Bone rose through the Detroit ranks via his weekly sets at the Love Club (The Shelter) where his techno selections earned him the kind of dedicated following DJs only dream about. At one point he had so many residencies at different clubs in the Motor City he was playing five nights a week, rubbing shoulders behind the decks with everyone from Juan Atkins to Jeff Mills. He is the boss of two of Detroit’s most rarefied labels, and has shown an unwavering commitment to his cause through his own output as a producer, releasing an album, Out Of Nowhere and a whole bunch of raw 12′′s and EPs that routinely get called things like ‘special’ and ‘other worldly.’

The word legend is often cast around in the world of electronic music.
Occasionally though it seems like just the right word to use. DJ Bone is steeped in Detroit history, and is amongst the most technically accomplished techno DJs in the world. His passion and his unique skill shine through in everything he does and has earned him his place amongst Techno royalty – Mills, DVS1, Ben Sims, Dave Clarke – and as an inspiration to a younger generation of DJs like Ben Klock and Ben UFO. His fervour and enthusiasm for DJing even caught the ear of John Peel, who invited Dulan to perform live in front of an audience at the BBC’s Maida Vale studios back in 2001—quite a coup when you consider that only Richie Hawtin, Jeff Mills and Dave Clarke had the honour of doing this before him.
