In 2022\, Baker has returned with The Festival\, a sonic embrace\, a call in for love\, and a cry out for connection. Baker wants us to bring our pain\nand suffering\, and align it all with melody. The Festival is a kaleidoscopic view in these complicated times. \nBest known as the songwriter and leader of Hey Rosetta!\, a Juno-nominated\, Polaris-shortlisted\, and multi award-winning band based in St. John’s\, Newfoundland. With over 15 years of performing their high-energy spectacle in stadiums\, clubs\, theatres and major festivals all over the world\, Hey Rosetta! called it quits in 2017. \nBaker has since transitioned from being the mover and shaker of a major indie rock band\, and ascended to a profound songwriter and producer. His solo LP\, Forever Overhead (Arts and Crafts)\, garnered him a Juno nomination for Songwriter of the Year\, three East Coast Music Awards (and several nominations)\, and a Polaris longlist. In 2019\, he released The Eighteenth Hole Variations EP\, the Side Door Sessions LP in 2020\, and that same year\, he released the Survivors EP. \n  \nERIC SLICK \n\nBlissfulness is at the core of Wiseacre\, the strikingly purifying sophomore record from Eric Slick. Wiseacre is a location\, literally. It’s the place he married the light in his life\, Natalie Prass\, and titling the record after it is an attempt at bottling the euphoria of his wedding day. The record isn’t just about the joy that comes from a loving existence blossoming out of a new relationship\, it’s also about the hard work that it takes to get to that place.“I’ve always been known as somebody who is on the sidelines\,” says Slick\, seeking to step out of the shadow of his previous roles. The majority of his time has been behind a drum set\, spending the last decade rounding out the industrious outfit Dr. Dog\, and as of late\, touring as a newlywed alongside his wife. Ironically\, the two met on Valentine’s Day at a Dr. Dog show before Slick had even joined the band. Slick’s previous solo work -his debut Palisades\, the orchestral Bullfighter\, and Out of Habit\, a John Fahey inspired EP pedaled as dollar bin ephemera -established the framework for the most significant project of his career thus far. While with Palisades and Bullfighter Slick mined his subconscious for the moodier and more abstract side of the coin\, Wiseacre is a technicolored exaltation. It reads like a novel\, sequencing in chronological order the ups and downs of self-acceptance before fully committing to someone else. “Before you get married\, you’re going through all the motions in your head\,” tells Slick\, “Am I worthy of marriage? Do I have the personality for this?” Across 10 songs\, Slick artfully sheds these insecurities resulting from fractured relationships (“Over It”)\, childhood trauma (“Children”)\, and his parents’ own hiccups (“Kind Of Person”). It’s an album about overcoming apprehensions so that he can find solace\, not only for himself\, but for the person he is now devoted to. By asking the question\, “Why did I think loving you was above me?” on “Haunted”\, Slick acknowledges that you don’t have to have a dark cloud hanging over your head to make meaningful art. “You can’t keep up chaos for your whole life\, it just doesn’t work. I’ve seen it my whole life with bands that we’ve toured with where it becomes this unsustainable\, untenable thing. So yeah\, fuck that.” This album comes as a welcomed rejection of the cliche that an artist needs to be a mess in order for their music to hold substance. After a year of false starts the LP was primarily recorded in a week alongside burgeoning producer Jeremy Ferguson at Nashville’s Battle Tapes Recording. From a rare and custom built Spectrasonics mixing board to just about every guitar pedal imaginable\, Ferguson had the tools to inspire moments like the off-kilter guitar solo in “Closer to Heaven”\, applying a pedal that starved its own power supply\, intermittently shorting it out. “I think it’s just a matter of time before everybody starts recording with him\,” predicted Slick\, “He’s a genius.”In addition to efforts made by one of his oldest friends and an indispensable guide for the record\, Andy Molholt of Speedy Ortiz & Laser Background\, vocal contributions were made by Steven Drozd of The Flaming Lips\, the prolific Butch Walker\, and a central force in Wiseacre’s DNA\, the radiant Natalie Prass offering a shimmering duet on the record’s apex single “Closer to Heaven.” The story behind “Closer to Heaven” stems from a recurring dream of being trapped in a three-story house with the bottom floor representing hell\, and the subsequent levels symbolizing purgatory and heaven. Each floor was dotted with the characters from his past\, sorted into their respective levels dependent upon their influence on his life. Prass’s voice is like an extended hand\, pulling him upward past the destructive faces and into the plane of proverbial Eden.\n\n\n\nAfter a heady first half\, the record begins to wind down a bit\, blossoming into something prettier. If the start of Wiseacre is peeling away at life’s chaos\, the latter half is welcoming the moments of cohesion amongst the chaos\, namely\, his own wedding. Singing “Tears streaming in the sun\, and you are the one\,” Slick reflects on when he was left uncontrollably crying as the woman he was about to marry walked down the aisle towards him on the touching track “Someday.” The song continues to ruminate on the couple’s destiny -growing old together\, finding joy in each other\, and eventually fizzing out with a mind at peace. And as much as that song is about his wife\, the most affecting line is a love letter and a gift to everyone important in his life\, assuring them “I’ll be in the air with you.” URL:https://www.high-noon.com/event/tim-baker/ LOCATION:High Noon Saloon\, 701 East Washington Avenue\, Madison\, 53703 ATTACH;FMTTYPE=image/jpeg:https://www.high-noon.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/TimBaker-HNS-Web.jpg END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;TZID=America/Chicago:20221129T200000 DTEND;TZID=America/Chicago:20221129T230000 DTSTAMP:20240328T103757 CREATED:20220816T160050Z LAST-MODIFIED:20221128T195128Z UID:7724-1669752000-1669762800@www.high-noon.com SUMMARY:Skegss DESCRIPTION:  \n\nCOVID-19 POLICY\nBased on the latest local guidelines\, attendees are no longer required to provide proof of negative COVID-19 test AND/OR vaccination for entry into this event. Their riotous releases have sparked circle pits and stage dives all over—from dingy pubs and skate parks\, to 20K capacity festival stages—and led the three lads on countless world tours. They’ve even topped the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) singles charts numerous times and\, more recently\, their debut LP My Own Mess reached number two on the album charts and earned an ARIA Award nomination for ‘Best Rock Album.’ Australia’s coastal sensation never lost their underdog flair despite their achievements\, and it’s that same spirit that defines their second studio album\, Rehearsal—a 13-track thrill ride through modern disillusioned youth. \nReleased late March 2021 via Loma Vista Recordings Rehearsal debuted at #1 on Australia’s ARIA Album and Vinyl sales chart with first week sales and was the triple j feature record. In addition- Rehearsal earned the trio of Toby\, Ben Reed (vocals\, guitar)\, and Jonny Lani (drums) their first cover story at NME Australia\, while its singles collectively earned early praise and support from Consequence\, DIY\, Rolling Stone Australia (‘Song You Need to Know’) and had 2 tracks place in the triple j Hottest 100 voted singles of the year. (‘Under the Thunder‘ (#27) and ‘Fantasising‘ (#66)) \nRehearsal was recorded at The Grove Studios with Grammy-award winning producer Catherine Marks (Foals\, Wolf Alice)\, who added a veteran’s finesse and expanded upon the rustic charm of demos the band tracked at The Music Farm using vintage gear from the ‘60s and ‘70s. From Reed’s self-made lyrical philosophies inspired by his favorite stand-up comedians to Toby Cregan’s reflections on life and his dog\, Rehearsal is the most candid and electrifying snapshot we’ve seen of Skegss yet. \n  \nFlying Machine \nWith elements of Punk\, Garage and Psychedelic Rock\, Flying Machine‘s music can be hard to define. The Australian 4 Piece formed in Byron Bay\, jamming and writing songs in their garage. They soon released their first Ep and started sharing stages with some of the noisiest and well-received punk bands around. \n  \nAdam Newling \nRaised in Cronulla born to first-generation Greek mother and Aussie father\, Adam Newling is an alternative artist who utilises country sensibilities and eclectic knowledge of sound in his music to unprecedented effect. With big dreams of one day performing in the heart of Nashville\, he has arrived to light up our hearts\, guitar in hand. \nNewling has taken this driving passion for music and has taken it onto the road\, playing with a vast range of wonderfully talented folks such as the inimitable Ruby Fields\, who have taught him lessons that he will take with him forever. Now\, he is more ready than ever to endeavour on his very own debut project\, making songs that feel unabashedly special\, and overwhelmingly urgent. \nInspired by the likes of Buck Meek of Big Thief and solo fame\, who has set the benchmark for uniqueness in an oversaturated world\, and the captivating\, dream-like music of Molly Burch\, it is clear as day that Newling is influenced by exceptional creatives. In the same vein as these artists\, and many others who create country-tinged indie rock\, Newling hopes to shine a light in the dark\, fusing unabashed creativity with heartfelt lyricism. Jacki Whisenant will be taking us behind the scenes at the UW Zoology Museum and their flesh-eating beetle colony!\n\nNext up is Whitney Thompson\, giving a talk about the “Taylor Swift” of the 1800s: Under the nom de plume of Claribel\, Charlotte Alington Barnard (1830-1869) published over 100 songs between 1859 and 1869\, mostly in the sentimental- or drawing-room-ballad genre. Despite the domesticity suggested by the genre’s name\, her songs were so popular that they escaped the drawing room and became staples not just of amateur music societies\, but also of large public concerts. However\, with her success came a fierce backlash from the trade press. Publications like The Orchestra and The Athenaeum decried the profusion of “Claribel-ware\,” occasionally outright calling the music “trash” and particularly protesting the nascent royalty system in which Claribel took part. Her career may have only lasted a decade\, but Claribel was nonetheless at the forefront of some massive changes in both the business and culture of music.\n\nLast up is Kevin Bachhuber\, who has a different angle on insect appreciation: food! Soren Staff and Beau Janke—co-founders of folk/rock/Americana outfit Them Coulee Boys—met as counselors at a bible camp in northern Wisconsin in 2011. Having both grown up amidst a stretch of glacial melt-carved river valleys in the upper Midwest\, otherwise known by French fur trappers as coulees\, they became fast friends. Camp counselors actually coined the name “them coulee boys” as a way to refer to the constant companions\, more often than not with instruments in hand. Soren’s little brother Jens joined the crew on mandolin at camp in 2012\, and since\, both Neil Krause on bass and Staš Hable on drums have helped to grow the band into the rollicking outfit it is today. \n2021 marks the release of their fourth record\, Namesake\, a ten-song collection that spans from pure and genuine ballads to a leaping\, countrified take on rock and roll. Singles from the recording have premiered via The Bluegrass Situation\, Ditty TV\, and Live for Live.\nTwangville readers dubbed the record “Best New Release”. \nNamesake was recorded at The Hive in the band’s hometown of Eau Claire\, WI. The album was produced by Grammy-winner Brian Joseph who has worked with the likes of Paul Simon\, Sufjan Stevens\, Ani Difranco\, and The Indigo Girls\, and earned his Grammy producing and engineering Bon Iver’s Bon Iver. Taking inspiration from the intimate nature of The Hive after a long period of quarantine\, Namesake feels familial—like old friends with no need for small talk. There are moments of power and punch\, balanced with intimacy only felt between the ones we love. \nNamesake finds Them Coulee Boys following a new trajectory\, combining their signature take on folk-grass and Americana with comfort on electric instruments and playing rock and roll. The record lives and breathes. It’s both intimate and bombastic. It’s the sweet aunt who makes delicious pies and the wiley uncle who’s not afraid to hit a bit of the hooch. At the bottom is the acceptance that comes with family and old friends; none of us are perfect\, but there’s enough love out there to make up for it. \nFor all things Them Coulee Boys\, please visit themcouleeboys.com. \nMore About Them Coulee Boys: With three full-length albums and an EP behind them\, including 2019’s Die Happy (produced by Trampled By Turtles’ Dave Simonett on Lo-Hi Records)\, the band has garnered international attention and earned press in American Songwriter and The Bluegrass Situation\, as well as tours with Trampled By Turtles and a spot on the songwriter’s Cayamo Cruise. In 2020\, they were named Milwaukee Journal Sentinel’s Band to Watch. In 2021\, they won Bluegrass/Americana Band of the Year by the Wisconsin Area Music Industry. At just sixteen\, Frasco worked for labels like Drive-Thru Records and Capitol\, booking nationwide tours for his pop-punk heroes and wheeling and dealing on calls he’d take on the sly during lunch. He’s been on road since he was 19 with his band Andy Frasco & the U.N.\, played over 250 shows per year for more than decade\, lived on bad bar food\, and slept in vans\, and now\, after more than a decade on the musical grind\, he’s finally finding himself. \nThe culmination of those efforts is Wash\, Rinse\, Repeat\, which drops April 8th via his own label\, Fun Machine Records. “This was my chance to learn my craft and fall in love with songwriting again\,” he says. “This is me. This is how I feel. I’m not trying to write songs for other people anymore. I’m just trying to write songs that help me. And hopefully through that\, help others\, too.” \nWritten across the country with members of Dashboard Confessional\, 3oh!3\, Doom Flamingo\, AWOLnation\, and more\, the record is a portrait of Frasco as a musician — and a man. Dealing with everything from addiction (“Spill the Beans”) to breaking old romantic habits (“Grow Old”) to fighting through the bad days to find the good (“Puff Break (Believe That)”)\, Wash\, Rinse\, Repeat stands as Frasco’s most complete\, mature effort yet. With Bonnaroo and touring on the horizon\, Frasco is ready for people to stop thinking of him as a party-boy frontman with a yen for stage-diving and to listen to his words. They had the full support of revered veteran indie label Saddle Creek. They’d received favorable notices from outlets such as the NME\, the Guardian\, and Stereogum. They had an energetic live show which was sure to convert a sea of devotees\, and an international tour booked to prove it. Most crucially\, they had an album of winning and memorable rock songs\, polished to a fine sheen by legendary producer Rob Schnapf. You could not fault these five fresh-faced youngsters for betting it all\, but their big mistake was one that no musician could have seen coming : their release date\, March 6th\, 2020. Within days\, the world Disq was poised to conquer ceased to exist.\n\nUndaunted by a storm of misfortunate which would have crushed a lesser band\, Disq now returns to take what is rightfully theirs\, with their sophomore effort Desperately Imagining Someplace Quiet\, a record which reaffirms the charms of Collector while pushing the sound and dynamic of the band in exciting and unexpected new directions. Rather than splintering and surrendering to their cursed circumstance\, Disq has emerged a stronger band\, more daring and more defiant\, ready to finish the job. It is fitting that the clever backronym effectively makes this the band’s self-titled album\, as it introduces the public to a new Disq\, a band both seasoned by experience and newly invigorated toward vivid new heights.\n\nThough initially formed as an extension of the lifelong friendship between guitarist Isaac DeBroux-Slone and bassist Raina Bock\, Disq has evolved into a far more democratic and egalitarian organization\, as Desperately Imagining Someplace Quiet finds guitarists Logan Severson and Shannon Conor splitting singing and songwriting duties with the aforementioned DeBroux-Slone and Bock. Such an approach could have easily fallen into the trap of “satisfying everyone\, pleasing no one\,” resulting in committee-approved music devoid of any personality or rough edges\, but happily\, the opposite is true.\n\nPushing play on Desperately Imagining Someplace Quiet\, it is easy to imagine that it is the year 1998\, and your cool older sister has returned from her freshman year at college only to hand you the sort of mind-altering mixtape out of which lifelong rock fanatics are born. It is the sort of record Beck might have made in his prime\, if you swapped out the hip-hop and delta blues of Odelay for midwestern emo\, Scottish power-pop\, and the sort of all-American indie that functions as “classic rock” for this cherubic cohort.\n\nA song such as “Prize Contest Life” initially scans as a straightforward and easygoing pop treat\, only to take a startling detour into the sort of cacophonous noise jam on which Yo La Tengo made their name. Rousing opener “Civilization Four” introduces itself with a dizzying collage of bells and whistles\, before a spoken sample helpfully announces “music\,” and the band lurches into a glam-grunge riff with enough Stones-y swagger to earn a place in the next Scorsese soundtrack. On understated closer “Hitting a Nail with a BB Gun\,” Bock sounds like Kurt Vile fronting Supertramp right when the edible hits. In between\, there are heartfelt rock anthems (“The Hardest Part”)\, acoustic lullabies (“Meant to Be”)\, and yearning alt-country gems (“If Only)\, to name just three of the detours along Disq’s winding road to long-deferred satisfaction.\n\nWrangling a melange of styles such as this is no simple task\, but the record is held together by the powerful yet nimble rhythm section of Bock and drummer Stu Manley\, whose muscular and hyperactive playing alternately keeps these adventurous compositions tethered firmly to the Earth and sends them soaring into stratosphere. Producer Matt Schuessler (the recording engineer of Collector making the most of his promotion) rarely lets a verse or chorus go by without adding some new sonic sparkle\, keeping the arrangements an ever-shifting kaleidoscope of textures and moods. If there is a record in 2022 which squeezes more ideas into 41 minutes\, then that record could surely only be the unlistenable mess that Desperately Imagining Someplace Quiet avoids becoming so deftly.\n\nThings being how they are in the world today\, the idea of finding “someplace quiet” feels like an increasingly remote possibility\, and the act of imagining such a place does\, indeed\, feel more and more desperate. Listening to Disq navigate the myriad twists and turns of their new album can feel akin to an attempted processing of our endless poly-crisis\, where each new catastrophe and atrocity jostle for position at the top of the timeline. With their new album\, Disq take a valiant stand against the temptation of complacency. As for that “someplace quiet?” It will have to wait… it’s about to get loud in here. The Halluci Nation\, takes its name from a phrase coined by John Trudell\, to describe the vast global community of people who remember at their core what it means to be human. As a visionary\nartist and activist\, Trudell recognized the connection between his accomplishments and what ATCR did intuitively through music and art. \nTrudell’s voice was the first heard on Tribe’s last record\, We Are The Halluci Nation\, and will\, fittingly\, be the first you hear on The Halluci Nation’s upcoming record\, One More Saturday Night. The album is a love letter to the Electric Pow Wow gatherings launched at Ottawa’s Babylon nightclub in 2007. It represents an imagined denouement to the biweekly Saturday-night parties that ended abruptly in 2017\, without ever getting the proper send-off. One More Saturday Night thus pays homage to the parties’ energy and momentum that elevated The Halluci Nation to this pivotal point in their career of fully mastering their own music style while also moving beyond club music; or “mixing dance music with dance music\,” as Bear Witness succinctly puts it. \n“We wanted to pay homage to the Electric Pow Wow and wrap that whole decade of experience up and close the cycle\, and in doing so give direct coordinates of where the future was headed. In a nutshell\, that’s what this album is about\,” says Bear. “We just wanted to make a party record\, as well\, one that people could dance to while still having the strong message we are known for.” \nAs was the case with its proud legacy\, The Halluci Nation’s future revolves around collaboration. From hip-hop star\, Yasiin Bey (AKA Mos Def)\, to the Indigenous Australian band\, OKA\, to the Wayuu-Colombian powerhouse\, Lido Pimienta\, the group has always sought out artists from around the world who would join the Halluci Nation family to form a like minded community as well as an international indigenous alliance. The upcoming record will be no exception–with features as inspired and unpredictable as the music from Texas “electro-cumbia” producer\, El Dusty\, Anishnaabeg drum group\, Chippewa Travellers\, Maori artist\, Rob Ruha\, Inuk singer\, Tanya Tagaq\, and round-dance/R&B singer Antoine\, among many others. \n“We wanted to take the music to another place\,” says 2oolman. “We showed a little bit of our ambitious side on this record and we got to do a lot of songs that we’d been wanting to do for a long time. And this is just the beginning. I wouldn’t be surprised if you heard The Halluci Nation produce a project for someone else. We’ve got so much more coming.” \nThis is a beginning\, not an end\, after all. The Halluci Nation maintains focus on what they feel they can impact most: how Indigenous people are seen. Through groundbreaking stage shows and ever-changing visuals\, Bear Witness and 2oolman are working to create media that reflects today’s Indigenous identity. By partnering with striking visual artists such as Whess Harman\, Saige Mukash and Cedar-Eve Peters along with a growing community of musical collaborators. They see themselves simply as contributors to a necessary conversation around a subtle and complex representation of the contemporary Indigenous experience. Greco-Roman mystery cults were a personalized and secretive way to worship the gods & goddesses we know and love. We’ll dive into members-only revelries\, raw meat feasts\, and the mythical equivalent of Civil War reenactments.” \nFinishing the evening is Emmy Hill. Emmy says: “I will briefly describe the geological and biological/paleontological history of the earth from the Big Bang to the present. We’ll discuss global climate change\, dinosaurs\, all the really weird animals we have had over the years\, and all the weird rocks we have as a result.” URL:https://www.high-noon.com/event/nerd-nite-5/ LOCATION:High Noon Saloon\, 701 East Washington Avenue\, Madison\, 53703 CATEGORIES:Nerd Nite ATTACH;FMTTYPE=image/jpeg:https://www.high-noon.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/NerdNite-Web.jpg END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;TZID=America/Chicago:20221215T200000 DTEND;TZID=America/Chicago:20221215T233000 DTSTAMP:20240328T103757 CREATED:20220726T150020Z LAST-MODIFIED:20221213T200750Z UID:7676-1671134400-1671147000@www.high-noon.com SUMMARY:Nikki Lane Denim and Diamonds Tour DESCRIPTION:  \n\nCOVID-19 POLICY\nBased on the latest local guidelines\, attendees are no longer required to provide proof of negative COVID-19 test AND/OR vaccination for entry into this event. Co-produced by Lane and fellow singer-songwriter\, Jonathan Tyler\, this emotional tour-de-force was recorded at Matt Pence’s Echo Lab studio in Denton\, Texas as well as at Club Roar with Collin Dupuis in Nashville\, Tennessee. Blending potent lyrics\, unbridled blues guitars and vintage Sixties country-pop swagger\, Lane’s new music will resonate as easily with Lana Del Rey and Jenny Lewis fans as those of Neil Young and Tom Petty. \nHighway Queen is a journey through heartbreak that takes exquisite turns. The record begins with a whiskey-soaked homage to Lane’s hometown (“700\,000 Rednecks”) and ends on the profoundly raw “Forever Lasts Forever\,” where Lane mourns a failed marriage — the “lighter shade of skin” left behind from her wedding ring. On “Forever” and the confessional “Muddy Waters\,” Lane’s lyrics align her with perceptive songwriters like Nick Lowe and Cass McCombs. Elsewhere\, “Companion” is pure Everly Brothers’ dreaminess (“I would spend a lifetime/ Playing catch you if I can”). She goes on a Vegas bender on the rollicking “Jackpot\,” fights last-call blues (“Foolish Heart”) and tosses off brazen one-liners at a backroom piano (“Big Mouth”). \n“Love is the most unavoidable thing in the world\,” Lane says. “The person you pick could be half set-up to destroy your life with their own habits — I’ve certainly experienced that before and taken way too long to get out of that mistake.” \nIn 2014\, Lane’s second album All or Nothin’ (New West) solidified her sandpaper voice beneath a ten-gallon hat as the new sound and look of outlaw country music. Produced by Dan Auerbach\, the record’s bluesy Western guitars paired with Lane’s Dusty Springfield-esque voice earned glowing reviews from NPR\, the Guardian and Rolling Stone. In three years since her Walk of Shame debut\, Lane said she was living most of the year on the road. \nGrowing up\, Lane used to watch her father pave asphalt during blistering South Carolina summers. She’d sit on the roller (“what helps smooth out the asphalt”) next to a guy named Rooster and divvy out Hardee’s lunch orders for the workers. “My father thought he was a country singer\,” Lane laughs. “He partied hard at night\, but by 6:30 AM he was out on the roads in 100-degree weather.” That’s the southern work ethic\, she says. “We didn’t have a lot of money\, but I was privileged with the knowledge of how to work hard\, how to learn and to succeed when things aren’t set up for me.” Creativity was an unthinkable luxury\, she adds. “When people told me I should try to get a record deal for songs I was writing\, I was like\, ‘that’s cute — I’ve got to be at work at 10 A.M.'” \n“Becoming a songwriter is one of the most selfish things I’ve ever done\,” Lane says plainly. She describes writing her first song at age 25 like it was a necessary act of self-preservation after a devastating breakup. Many of her early songs\, she said on Shame and Nothin\,’ were about the fleetingness of relationships she believed were permanent\, she says. Lane’s main line of work in those days was a fashion entrepreneur (she’s currently the owner of Nashville’s vintage clothing boutique High Class Hillbilly). It brought her to cities around the country\, New York to Los Angeles to Nashville. And like a true wanderer\, Lane’s sound crisscrosses musical genres with ease\, while the lonesome romantic in her remains. Even a soft song like\, “Send The Sun\,” with its lilting downward strum\, is flush with bittersweet emotion. “Darling\, we’re staring at the same moon\,” Lane sings lovingly. “I used to say that to my ex\,” she says with cheerful stoicism\, “to try to brighten the long nights\, stay positive.” \nHighway Queen is poised to be Lane’s mainstream breakthrough. “Am I excited to spend years of my life in a van\, away from family and friends? No\, but I’m excited to share my songs\, so they’ll reach people and help them get through whatever they’re going through. To me\, that’s worth it.” \n“Lay You Down” is one of those unexpected moments for Lane. “That song was inspired by something Levon Helm’s wife posted on Facebook when he was sick with cancer\,” Lane says. “I was just so moved by her telling the world how much love he felt from people writing to them\, and moved that because of the Internet\, I was able to see that love — even from a distance.” The song became surreal for Lane and her band when her longtime guitarist\, Alex Munoz\, was diagnosed with cancer while they were playing it. “It deepened my perspective and the importance of keeping everyone safe\,” says Lane. \nOn the record cover\, Lane looks out on wide\, unowned Texan plains\, leaning on the fearsome horns of a massive steer. Wearing a vintage Victorian dress\, the stark photo invokes a time before highways existed. The symbolism isn’t lost on Lane. Highway Queen was a pioneering moment for her as an artist. \n“I was always a smart girl\, always had to yell to be heard\,” she says\, “But this was the first time in my career where I decided how things were going to go; I was willing to take the heat.” Lane included the bonus track “Champion” as a small testament to that empowerment. “It makes a point\,” Lane says with a smile\, “That I appreciate what you’re saying\, but get the fuck out of my way.” URL:https://www.high-noon.com/event/nikki-lane/ LOCATION:High Noon Saloon\, 701 East Washington Avenue\, Madison\, 53703 ATTACH;FMTTYPE=image/png:https://www.high-noon.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/UPDATED-Nikki-Lane-Web-Header.png END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;TZID=America/Chicago:20221216T200000 DTEND;TZID=America/Chicago:20221216T233000 DTSTAMP:20240328T103757 CREATED:20221101T150027Z LAST-MODIFIED:20221213T233308Z UID:7963-1671220800-1671233400@www.high-noon.com SUMMARY:Funky Christmas DESCRIPTION:  \n\nCOVID-19 POLICY\nBased on the latest local guidelines\, attendees are no longer required to provide proof of negative COVID-19 test AND/OR vaccination for entry into this event. At 41 years old\, he’s played on a dozen albums\, recorded over 100 songs\, and performed countless shows as a sideman\, frontman\, and solo/duo act. \nWith his new album\, “Echoes in the Treetops\,” Hall makes it clear that inside his chest beats the raging heart of a rocker. The seven-song collection has the fire\, the effervescence of a debut album\, but it’s seasoned with the soul and perspective of a high-mileage road warrior and the wisdom of a one-time party animal who saw the light and found sobriety five years ago. \nA member of the Smokin’ Bandits from 2004-13\, Hall also has played in the White Iron Band since 2009 and toured with Nicholas David from 2014-17. \nIn 2013\, he formed Gregg Hall and the Wrecking Ball\, recording three albums of his take on outlaw country backed by top-flight La Crosse bandmates: “This\, That and the Land” in 2016\, “The Mrs. Hippy Sessions\, Vol. 1” in 2017 and “True Story” in 2020. Going country didn’t exactly go against Hall’s nature. His first concert\, after all\, was Johnny Cash\, and he named his second son Waylon\, age 7 (he also has a 14-year-old son\, Shay). \nOver the years he’s shared bills with Todd Snider\, Jackson Browne\, Bill Miller\, Shooter Jennings\, Little Feat\, Dave Simonett\, Whey Jennings\, Trampled by Turtles\, just to name a few. Their music is steeped in sounds and lyricism of improvisational rock and roll\, reggae\, soul\, carribean jazz\, bluegrass\, americana\, and folk\, among others – if it has to be contained to a category\, World music suits it best. Chock-full of impressive songwriting ability and instrumental virtuosity\, and with two released full-length studio albums\, a live album and a third studio album in the chute\, this 6-piece ensemble of artistry has nowhere to go but up. \nJoe Dunn – Guitar / Vocals\nDemitri Rallis – Guitar / Vocals\nDanny Q – Saxaphone\nJimmy Geisinger – Bass\nDoug Christianson – Percussion\nGeoffrey Randall – Drums\nKevin Dorsey – Keys \nSince their first show in late 2012\, a major buzz about the band Frogleg has been spreading through the music scene stemming from their ever-growing weekly tradition\, “Frogleg Thursdays @ Bunkers” in downtown Minneapolis. After four years\, Frogleg closed the book on that chapter of their musical path. Their send off from Bunker’s was met with a series of sold out appearances at the club counting down to the final show. \nSince departing from their home gig\, the band has headlined shows at most of the major venues in Minneapolis from the Cabooze to the Skyway Theatre downtown as well as an appearance on the First Avenue mainroom stage. Outside of Minneapolis\, Frogleg has expanded their touring circuit considerably\, now including many of the friendly mountain states as well as the greater Midwest. Frogleg has shared the stage with Steven Tyler\, Jeff Austin Band\, New Orleans Suspects\, Devon Allman\, Orgone\, Raw Oyster Cult\, Samantha Fish\, Allie Kral\, Robert Randolph and has played multiple dates with Melvin Seals and the Jerry Garcia Band. \nKnown for their songwriting and improvisational live performances\, Frogleg would be best described as a soul band\, as their influences are not drawn from one specific genre. A typical Frogleg show usually features a unique blend of Funk\, Reggae\, Rock and Jazz exploration. \nFrogleg’s debut\, self-titled album\, released in April of 2015\, first pressing sold out in under six months. The band followed up in 2017 with the release of ‘Busy Checking In’. The release show was met with much excitement pairing Frogleg with George Porter Jr. and Jon Cleary on the beautiful Como Dockside Pavilion. The album is seeing lots of attention from national radio\, charting on stations from California to New York! The band followed up their release by pressing the album to a double vinyl and adding on some bonus live tracks from an in studio radio performance. The vinyl release show quickly sold out – something that Frogleg seems to be making a habit of. Do yourself a favor and go see a Frogleg show! \nChicken Wire Empire \nBorn from the Wisconsin music scene\, Chicken Wire Empire rides the line between traditional bluegrass and the contemporary. Its members have spent a lifetime honing their craft\, with deep roots in tradition and music throughout the midwest scene. Their 2022 release “Fresh Pickles” features all original music by Minnesota songsmith Chris Castino (Big Wu)\, reimagined in Chicken Wire Empire’s style. It is graced by guests Peter Rowan\, Sam Bush\, Jerry Douglas\, Andy Hall\, Tim O’Brien\, and Nick Forester. Raine was a contestant on season 20 of The Voice\, has been featured on PBS’s 30 Minute Music Hour\, and most recently was featured in NPR’s “Best 2021 Tiny Desk Contest.” When Raine first picked up a guitar at 11 years old\, she found a home for the stories she had always felt the need to tell. Her lyricism is potent and poetic\, and her arrangements fill in the cracks that language can’t. As a teenager\, she spent her evenings playing at blues clubs with musicians three times her age. Now\, she writes and arranges all the parts for her own 9-piece band. Raine’s timeless pop sound paired with guitar skills well beyond her years have earned her comparisons to music icons such as Prince. Whether writing\, producing\, or performing live\, her talent is met head-on with an undeniable sense of purpose.
