After three albums and a decade of hard work\, including countless performances worldwide\, the members — Cory Castro\, Lawrence Warner\, Justin Castro\, Jake Hughes\, and Kevin Garcia — have a fresh perspective on life. The band is through obsessing over what comes next and romanticizing the moments that have already passed. Instead\, Free Throw is making music about the present and how seeking balance in our lives is far more meaningful work than the endless pursuit of whatever you deem to be ‘enough.’ \n“It’s very hard when for a band like us to take time off\,” drummer Kevin Garcia explains. “We go home to write and record\, then we go on tour. Rinse and repeat\, you know? When we got into this writing process\, we stopped feeling like we existed in a mold or on a path that Free Throw is supposed to keep going on with our contemporaries. We stopped worrying about what tour we may be fighting for next or what someone else does. We were just writing songs that we really like writing. ” \nThroughout the album’s twelve tracks\, Piecing It Together finds the men of Free Throw abandoning childhood notions of success and happiness through a thorough exploration of personal fulfillment. It’s about reaching the heights that once felt impossible and everything that comes after. How no matter what we do or where we go\, we must continue to wake up and find the strength to keep on keeping on despite everything we tell ourselves about ourselves. \nPiecing It Together is an exploration of self-acceptance\, and Free Throw invites everyone to join. With personal roots that go deep — frontman Carson Macc and guitarist Nick Barone have been playing together since they were teenagers — Mac Saturn has grooves at its heart\, playing with a buoyant energy that makes dancing a command rather than an option\, and with a dynamic scope that speaks to the group’s musical ambition\, and precision. As drummer-turned-singer Macc puts it\, “The songs are rock\, but they’ve got that other thing going on — that funky\, dancey\, Motown\, whatever you want to call it — that makes them our own thing.” Mac Saturn covers a lot of ground on its debut five-song EP Until the Money Runs Out\, from the hip-swiveling “Diamonds” and “Mr. Cadillac” to the urgent punch of “Persian\,” the treacly touch of “Ain’t Like You” and the rootsy restraint of “Plain Clothes Gentleman.” And Macc sings everything with the assurance and swagger that’s as much Harry Styles as MIck Jagger. As Detroit music journalist Gary Graff praised\, “Mac Saturn’s muscle puts the band on a different plane than of what can be considered contemporary pop-rock.” Catch ’em on tour around North America this winter and get in on the ground floor of what will surely be the next significant band to hail from the historic heritage of the Motor City. \nBilly Tibbals \nMoving from London to Hollywood back in 2014\, Billy Tibbals quickly found a love for the city and its esoteric\, debauched history. Combining this with his childhood obsession with British rock and roll\, surrealist literature\, and musicals from the 1940’s\, Billy’s music presents a unique and fantastical view of the world around us. As a part of the exciting new wave of rock and roll music emerging from Los Angeles\, Billy hopes to inspire the youth to get off their phones and come join in with the fun. It’s only just begun! \nRocker Billy Tibbals draws on his influences and introduces a bombastic and riveting British-inspired attitude with his debut effort Stay Teenage. Billy and his band will debut these songs on his tour with Mac Saturn in Winter 2023. Discovered by Kiss bass player Gene Simmons\, the group issued their eponymous debut album in 1975\, which hewed closer to prog rock than the glam pop that would inform future endeavors like On Earth as It Is in Heaven (1977) and Sinful (1979). The group went their separate ways in 1981\, but re-formed in the late ’90s with a new lineup\, and released two studio albums (1999’s In the Beginning and 2019’s Risen) and numerous compilations. \nFormed in Washington\, D.C.\, the group’s self-titled 1975 debut was recorded for the flamboyant Casablanca Records label — home to Kiss — with a line-up comprising Frank DiMino (vocals)\, Punky Meadows (guitar\, ex-BUX)\, Gregg Giuffria (keyboards)\, Mickie Jones (bass\, ex-BUX)\, and Barry Brandt (drums). A heady slab of heavy pomp rock with lengthy songs swathed in Giuffria’s atmospheric keyboards and featuring the longtime stage favorite “Tower\,” it was followed in 1976 by Helluva Band\, which continued in a similar vein\, with the group’s famous white satin stage clothing making its debut on the album sleeve. On Earth as It Is in Heaven saw a distinct change in musical direction\, as the band adopted a a more pop/rock-oriented sound\, and introduced a clever logo that read identically when upside down. \n1978’s White Hot\, with Felix Robinson replacing Jones\, was helped by Eddie Leonetti’s sympathetic production\, and produced minor U.S. hits in “I Ain’t Gonna Eat Out My Heart Anymore” and “The Winter Song.” Leonetti subsequently produced Sinful and the in-concert set Live Without a Net. Angel’s record sales never quite reflected their popularity as a live act\, and a legal dispute with PolyGram prompted the band’s breakup in 1981. Giuffria attempted to revive the band in 1984\, but the abortive reunion led to the formation of the more successful House of Lords. Robinson\, meanwhile\, appeared in an early White Lion line-up and played with 707. Brandt and DiMino re-formed Angel in the late ’90s to record In the Beginning\, with the help of guitarist and songwriter Richard Marcello. They staged an Angel reunion of sorts by persuading former colleagues Robinson and Meadows to play on the track “Set Me Free.” \nThe group performed off and on during the early 2000s and issued a handful of compilation albums. Bassist and founding member Mickie Jones passed away in 2009 after battling liver cancer. Punky Meadows released a solo LP\, Fallen Angel\, in 2016\, and in 2018\, Meadows and DiMino toured under the name Frank DiMino & Punky Meadows of Angel. The band officially re-formed the following year with Meadows and DiMino joined by Danny Farrow\, Steve E. Ojane\, Billy Orrico\, and Charlie Calv. The newly reactivated Angel released their seventh studio effort\, Risen\, later that October. Those shows celebrated the band’s 50th anniversary and served as their official send-off\, while Circles Around the Sun was designed to reflect the Dead’s overall spacy and groove-laden feel. After the tour\, the group released a self-titled album from the Fare Thee Well gigs\, supporting the record with their own road trip. The response was so positive that they continued on with a follow-up project\, Let It Wander\, in 2018. This record was less influenced by the Dead and more free-form\, delivering on the roots influence of jazz-funk\, soul\, and fusion. The band underwent a fundamental transition in 2019. After completing the Meets Joe Russo EP and a third album\, their guitarist Neal Casal committed suicide on August 26\, 2019. He left his bandmates a note asking for them to continue in his absence– to continue recording\, touring\, and playing together. The band decided to carry on with a rotating cast of guitarists\, landing on John Lee Shannon as the permanent replacement. \nIn this metamorphosis\, Circles Around the Sun spans both heartbreak and hope. Doors close; windows open; new directions extend themselves in mysterious ways. But sometimes you know it’s real from the first beat. It just clicks. It’s just how Neal would want it. It’s Circles Around The Sun. \nJenny O. \nSpectra is the fourth full-length album by Jenny O. It is a celebration of the universal\, the organic\, a manual straight from the soul on how to love practically and unconditionally\, in all directions. These are hymns straight from the Church of Rock n’ Roll. \n“Spectra refers to our multitudes\, the ways we identify and experience life\, as a nebula… nuance\, variation\, not one thing or another\, but somewhere between\, unfixed. Spectra explores connectivity and contains overt expressions of love for others\, oneself\, and nature. It is my favorite record I have made and my most joyful.” \nJenny O. played the guitar\, bass\, synthesizers and more on Spectra. She grew up on Long Island\, New York\, in a household that worshiped early rock n’ roll. She is a classically trained composer\, singer\, and multi-instrumentalist who studied jazz and experimented with trip hop in the early 2000’s before making her way to California and back to rock n’ roll. Jenny O. made two albums with Jonathan Wilson— Automechanic and Peace & Information\, followed by New Truth and now Spectra— both with Kevin Ratterman. She has toured with legends like Sixto Rodriguez\, Violent Femmes\, Father John Misty\, and Leon Russell\, and performed vocals on recordings by Bonnie “Prince” Billy\, Conor Oberst\, and Jim James. Los Angeles Times has written\, “it’s safe to say that no one sees the keyboard quite like Marco Benevento’s genre-blind mashup of indie rock\, jazz and skewed improvisation\,” while NPR Music raves that Benevento combines “the thrust of rock\, the questing of jazz and the experimental ecstasy of jam\,” and Rolling Stone praises “the textures and colors available in his keyboards and arsenal of manipulated pedals and effects along with his deceptively rich\, catchy melodies and straight-ahead grooves.” \nIndeed\, Marco Benevento’s music covers a wide swath of ground\, seemingly connecting the dots in the vast space between LCD Soundsystem and Leon Russell\, His songwriting is smart and earthy\, yet simultaneously pulsating with dance rock energy. Benevento’s high energy live shows—fronting a three-piece band currently comprised by bassist Karina Rykman and drummer Chris Corsico—have led to numerous high profile appearances\, ranging from Carnegie Hall to Pickathon. In the studio\, he’s collaborated with the likes of Richard Swift (The Shins\, Nathaniel Rateliff)\, Leon Michels (Lee Fields\, Freddie Gibbs) and Simone Felice (The Felice Brothers\, The Lumineers) among others. \nOn his latest album\, simply titled\, ‘Benevento\,’ the Woodstock\, NY-based artist dives deep down a psych funk rabbit hole\, reimagining the current Zeitgeist of these troubled times through surrealistic optimism and the pure joy of an irresistible groove on tracks like “At The End Or The Beginning\,” “Winter Rose” and “Do You Want Some Magic?” \nPress Quotes\n“Benevento jams with a concentration on the textures and colors available in his keyboards and arsenal of manipulated pedals and effects. His songs feature deceptively rich\, catchy melodies and straight-ahead grooves that expand with subtle mounting gestures.” – Rolling Stone \n“A musician so original that he can ultimately only be judged against his own standard.” -All Music \n“Reminiscent of Dr. John’s New Orleans psychedelia and piano chops with a hint of Father John Misty’s general coolness\, Marco Benevento brings something very unique to the modern pop world.” – The Wild Honey Pie \n“Benevento continues to straighten his twisted sound into the guise of an indie-rock singer-songwriter\, harnessing his inventive sonic palette into rewardingly bite-size pop songs that touch on disco and soul.” – LA Times \n“Marco Benevento is one of the most talented keys players of our time.” – CBS \n“Benevento’s colorful\, improvisational\, piano-based compositions stretch so wide and cover so much sonic ground that the idea of genre seems quaint. Very quietly\, he has been evolving into one of the most vital figures in jazz or rock or post-jazz or post-rock or—all of music.” –\nKansas City Pitch \n“Imaginative at heart\, Benevento demands you to be too when engaging with his work. Otherwise\, you probably are missing out on something special. Driven to experiment with chords and melodies with the intention of getting a little dirty along the way\, Benevento’s collisional approach is refreshing and absolutely delightful.” – Consequence of Sound \n“A vocalizing party-starter\, Benevento extrudes sinister balladry and hustling disco beats.” – Village Voice URL:https://www.high-noon.com/event/marco-benevento/ LOCATION:High Noon Saloon\, 701 East Washington Avenue\, Madison\, 53703 ATTACH;FMTTYPE=image/jpeg:https://www.high-noon.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/MarcoBenevento-HNS-Web.jpg END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;TZID=America/Chicago:20230319T120000 DTEND;TZID=America/Chicago:20230319T130000 DTSTAMP:20240328T133720 CREATED:20230109T160021Z LAST-MODIFIED:20230313T151345Z UID:8137-1679227200-1679230800@www.high-noon.com SUMMARY:The Rock and Roll Playhouse Plays Music of The Ramones for Kids & More DESCRIPTION:  \n\n\nBAG POLICY\nBags (max size 12″ x 6″ x 12″) are allowed and will be searched upon entry. Inspired by Snarky Puppy\, Umphrey’s McGee\, Herbie Hancock\, and many others; their innovative original songs and ambitious interpretations of popular covers offer an impressive multi-genre exploration of funk\, jazz fusion\, prog rock\, reggae\, and more. Described by Isthmus Magazine as “summer-jam-perfect”\, their sound seeks to employ a musically educated tone; Wurk fills the gap between complexity and groove\, impressing fans and keeping them dancing all night. The Madison Area Music Association (MAMA) Awards recognized their rapid ascent to stardom in 2018 with the Breakthrough Artist of the Year Award; then only six months later Wurk won five more awards including the coveted 2019 MAMA Artist of the Year Award. Wurk’s 2021 single “Ignition” won the 2022 MAMA for Song of the Year Award and helped the group become recognized once more as the 2022 MAMA Artist of Year. \nMax Morkri drives the band with his blend of solid grooving and intricate drum chops\, which is coupled by Casey Seymour’s powerful bass lines to glue the band together. Frank Laufenberg (guitar/vocals) provides rhythmic and tonal complexity while filling the role as the principal songwriter and vocalist. Daniel Haschke (saxophones/flute) and Carl Hipenbecker (trumpet/vocals) top it off with impressive horn lines and effects. Most of Wurk’s members grew up in Mount Horeb\, WI\, just west of Madison; their shared background creates the band’s closeness and ability to communicate complicated ideas musically. \nLunar Ticks \nLunar Ticks are an eclectic Improvisational/Alternative Rock band from Chicago\, IL. \nThe band is influenced by the songwriting and studio experimentation of 90’s and 2000’s innovative Alternative/Indie rock bands like Wilco\, My Morning Jacket\, The Flaming Lips\, Ween\, Yo La Tengo\, Pavement\, and Dr. Dog\, and fuses it with genre-bending\, progressive musicality\, and exploratory improvisations in the vein of The Grateful Dead\, Phish\, and Umphrey’s McGee. \nLunar Ticks are equally at home on a bill with a folk singer\, punk band\, free jazz ensemble\, you name it. Each setlist is formed from their diverse and expansive song list of originals and covers; debuting new material at almost every show. Extended improvisational passages can turn on a dime or meditate and unfurl in unexpected ways. Lunar Ticks aim to create a unique and memorable experience every time they pick up their instruments. We’re being true to ourselves. It isn’t a departure\, it’s an evolution — the gate is wide open right now.” \n“We’ve always had such a reverence and respect for those first and second-generation bluegrass bands\, and it was that sound that initially inspired all of us to get together\,” Barker adds. “And that will always be part of our sound. But\, we also need to grow as artists\, and as individuals — for us\, that means bringing in a wider palette of sonic influences.” \nFormed by Greer and banjoist Jesse Langlais over 15 years ago on a ridge high above the Asheville skyline\, the sturdy foundation of Town Mountain came into play with the addition of Barker not long into the band’s tenure. From there\, the group pulled in fiddle virtuoso Bobby Britt and bassist Zach Smith. And though the road has been long\, it’s also been bountiful. \n“It’s definitely been a slow climb. But\, it’s been a climb nonetheless\, where each new opportunity is filled with a sense of gratitude — to be able to make music\, to be able to play music with your friends\,” Barker says. “And to be able to bring music to the people\, and have them want to show up and listen to it? Well\, we’re thankful for that every single day.” \nLines in the Levee also marks the band’s debut album release for famed Nashville label\, New West Records. Well-known and championed as a fiercely independent act\, the members of Town Mountain felt an immediate kinship with the record label — this genuine bond of creative fulfillment and sustained artistic growth to ensure the long game for the ensemble. \n“We’ve always wanted to have a relationship with a label that felt right\, and New West felt right\,” Langlais says. “New West came to some of our shows and the ball started rolling. They knew they wanted to work with us\, and we knew we wanted to work with them. New West lets the artist steer the ship and that’s what we were looking for — to have the autonomy to do what we want\, but also have a great label behind us.” \nRecorded at Ronnie’s Place (part of the Sound Stage Studios) on Music Row in the heart of Nashville\, Lines in the Levee is a bona fide workshop in the seamless blend of Americana\, country\, bluegrass and folk roots — this crossroads of deep influences and cultivated visions each member of Town Mountain brings to the table. \n“The studio has been part of Nashville for over 50 years\, and there’s a certain mojo that comes from a space like that — you’re literally stepping into history and that history is in\nthe air when you hit the record button\,” Langlais says. \nThe album also cements the standing of drummer Miles Miller (of Sturgill Simpson musical lore) a creative force of nature\, one who throws several more logs of ideas and inspiration onto the fire that burns brightly within the group — onstage and in the studio. \n“When we were looking to add percussion to our sound\, Miles was the guy we wanted. We’ve been good friends for a long time\, and it just seemed like the natural fit to have him join us\,” Greer says. “He’s a fantastic drummer who really elevates the music so high. And he truly understands how to bring drums into a string band setting\, something not a lot of people can do.” \nLines in the Levee is also a moment in time for Town Mountain to take pause and glance over its shoulder at the road to the here and now. It’s this whirlwind blur of people\, places and things that fly by\, especially when your hardscrabble existence is spent along that lost highway — bouncing from town to town\, show to show\, all in an effort to turn long-held dreams into a daily reality. \n“Right from the beginning\, it’s always been about camaraderie and the creation of something unique\, where we haven’t let any of the bumps on the music business road get us down too much\,” Langlais says. “And I think we feel really comfortable with where the Town Mountain sound is right now — that’s a damn good feeling.” \nCole Chaney \n“Originally from Boyd County\, KY\, Chaney has since relocated to Lexington and is sure to be the next big thing coming out of Kentucky. At only 21 years old\, Chaney’s catalog may be small\, but he already boasts an absolute masterpiece of an album in which he proves wise beyond his years. \nMercy\, his debut album released in 2021\, is a 12-song showcase of Eastern Kentucky\, blue collar anthems highlighted by Chaney’s deft lyricism and storytelling. An unknown musician prior to the album’s release\, Chaney has since experienced a meteoric rise in popularity and has quickly amassed a growing and dedicated fan base\, already thirsty for new music.” \n-Whiskey Riff URL:https://www.high-noon.com/event/town-mountain/ LOCATION:High Noon Saloon\, 701 East Washington Avenue\, Madison\, 53703 ATTACH;FMTTYPE=image/png:https://www.high-noon.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/Web-1.png END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;TZID=America/Chicago:20230327T200000 DTEND;TZID=America/Chicago:20230327T233000 DTSTAMP:20240328T133720 CREATED:20221101T160006Z LAST-MODIFIED:20230313T152245Z UID:7954-1679947200-1679959800@www.high-noon.com SUMMARY:Roger Clyne & The Peacemakers DESCRIPTION:  \n\n\nBAG POLICY\nBags (max size 12″ x 6″ x 12″) are allowed and will be searched upon entry. But the inspiration for the song dates back to the time Roger went to Taipei\, Taiwan\, as a college student to teach English during the day and busk with his guitar at night for money. \nToday\, as Clyne prepares to record his 11th studio album\, he continues to transform his life experiences\, inspirations\, observations and his own muses into timeless music. And whether he’s wearing his Converse high tops\, boots or sandals\, Clyne’s blend of punk rock\, country-western and mariachi influences have made him\, drummer PH Naffah\, guitarist Jim Dalton and bassist Nick Scropos – collectively known as Roger Clyne & The Peacemakers – one of America’s best live rock-n-roll bands. \nStarting with the seminal Tempe quartet\, The Refreshments\, Clyne and Naffah put the fun in rock during the 90s grunge era with a sense of humor. They also started what would become a trademark sound on all future albums by adding mariachi horns\, something Clyne was influenced by while in college studying Cultural Anthropology with an ethnography study of mariachis during a three month immersion stay with a local family in Ensenada\, Mexico. \nThe Refreshments’ debut album\, “Fizzy\, Fuzzy\, Big & Buzzy\,” became a cult classic. It produced the alternative radio hit “Banditos” which also had significant airplay on MTV and earned The Freshies an appearance on The Conan O’Brien Show. Clyne then penned and performed the theme song for the Mike Judge animated TV series\, King of Hill. In 2017\, Here’s to Life: The story of The Refreshments\, was released. The feature-length documentary was a hit with fans and critics alike. \nChanges within their record label and internal band issues resulted in Clyne and Naffah going on a vision quest of sorts in the Whetstone Mountains near the Clyne Ranch in Southeastern Arizona. It was there that Clyne found inspiration in the rolling hills and the jukeboxes of small town taverns that still played Marty Robbins and Johnny Cash – music he had shed from his youth in favor of bands like Camper Van Beethoven & They Might Be Giants. But after reconnecting with those old country records\, Clyne and Naffah wrote and recorded under a new moniker what would become Roger Clyne & The Peacemakers’ debut album\, “Honky Tonk Union.” \nThe album was the perfect combination of classic rock and twang\, and fans immediately connected with it. Their independent release\, “Honky Tonk Union\,” debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s internet sales chart in 1999 prompting a call from a Billboard exec to their Manager demanding\, “ Who the hell is Roger Clyne and why is he #1 on my chart?!” beating out much better known artists \nRCPM released eight more albums that landed in the top ten of Billboard’s Internet Sales Chart\, including a No. 1 debut for their third album\, “Americano!” – all without the backing of a major record label and while flying under the radar of commercial radio. \nIn 2019\, Roger Clyne & The Peacemakers were inducted into the Arizona Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame\, joining the likes of fellow Arizona legends Alice Cooper\, Buck Owens\, Glen Campbell\, Stevie Nicks\, Linda Ronstadt and Waylon Jennings. \nLater that fall\, RCPM was invited by a man who\, like Roger\, also knows a little something about tequila and throwing big parties in Mexico. The band headlined Sammy Hagar’s Cabo Wabo Cantina on the eve of Hagar’s weekend birthday celebration. \nRoger Clyne & The Peacemakers have curated their own annual music festival\, Circus Mexicus\, in the sleepy beach town of Puerto Peñasco\, Mexico\, which draws thousands of fans from around the world. The festival not only has a major impact on the local economy\, but charity events hosted by the band and fans alike help raise money for a local orphanage\, support local youth sports and help feed shelter animals. \nClyne not only sings about life in the border-lands\, he also produces his own ultra-premium spirit\, Mexican Moonshine Tequila (soon to be re-named Canción Tequila). Owned by the entire band\, it was the official tequila at the Arizona Diamondbacks Chase stadium in 2016\, 2017 and 2018. Started in 2011\, the award-winning spirit is distributed in multiple states as well as Sonora\, Mexico. \nRoger Clyne & The Peacemakers have toured all over the US and achieved a faithful following through hard work and great music. They have done this all while being independent\, without the safety net of a label or a label’s radio promotion department. Dubbed “The Springsteen of the Southwest\,” by the Asbury Park Press. The band delivers exciting live performances that garner declarations like the one from emcee Jay Peterman of the Seinfeld TV show at Alice Cooper’s annual Christmas Pudding event\, “Young man\, you light that stage a-flame!” URL:https://www.high-noon.com/event/roger-clyne-the-peacemakers/ LOCATION:High Noon Saloon\, 701 East Washington Avenue\, Madison\, 53703 ATTACH;FMTTYPE=image/png:https://www.high-noon.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/Web-2.png END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;TZID=America/Chicago:20230329T200000 DTEND;TZID=America/Chicago:20230329T233000 DTSTAMP:20240328T133720 CREATED:20230217T180017Z LAST-MODIFIED:20230313T152313Z UID:8267-1680120000-1680132600@www.high-noon.com SUMMARY:Evanoff DESCRIPTION:  \n\n\nBAG POLICY\nBags (max size 12″ x 6″ x 12″) are allowed and will be searched upon entry. After years on the Madison rock scene all three members; Pete Ress\, Gavin Lefebvre and Tony Leskinen have seen various degrees of success and failure\, but continually redefine the limits of rock music. \nWhen The Skintones formed in ’98\, the main goal was simply to get together and have a good time. But lo and behold\, their sound caught on and they developed a devoted following and accolades from fans and bands alike. All three members bring something substantial to the table. Especially vocals\, they make sure that everyone adds into the music. Levity is the glue that holds their creative minds together. \nThe Skintones bring enough of their own creative energies to bear on the music that’s not easy to categorize. Their “eclectically pleasing” sound has elated positive crowd response in and out of Madison. They make sure that every show is fresh\, and often tailor the playlist to the crowd. Sometimes people don’t immediately catch on however. “I think that when people don’t recognize something immediately they don’t know if it’s innovative or if it sucks‚ there’s not a frame of reference\,” says Skintones drummer Tony Leskinen. If you listen to The Skintones album and don’t smile at least once\, whether you like it or not\, you’re probably dead. \nThe Pimps \nThe Goodyear Pimps formed in Rockford\, IL in 1997 and after honing their chops in Midwestern clubs they gained a fanbase that made national labels take notice. They were signed by Disney subsidiary Hollywood Records in 2000 for a two album contract worth $1 million. \nThe Pimps were promised no censorship and full creative control\, but when they delivered the first of the two contracted albums\, More Songs\nAbout Drugs With Curse Words\, the suits at Disney balked at releasing it. The Pimps were dropped in 2001\, but this major label tale has an oddly happy ending that allowed the Pimps to walk away from the label with $600\,000 of their contract. \nBeyond that the Pimps has other claims to fame\, or at very least infamy\, including having songs on major movie soundtracks for Mission Impossible 2 and Crazy Beautiful as well as having a song featured on the long running NBC drama Third Watch. Also noteworthy was the series of cease and desist letters from the Goodyear corporation that forced the band to change their name from the more imaginative and less misogynistic moniker of the Goodyear Pimps. \nDespite their positive and negative brushes with the corporate world\, the Pimps have remained independent. They spent their $600\,000 payment from Hollywood Records to buy their own apartment building in Rockford that serves as living quarters for all the band members as well as housing the Pimps’ office and recording studio. They have achieved the noble goal of completely avoiding day jobs by investing their money wisely and keeping up a schedule of 160 shows a year during the entire decade mainly playing 2 or 3 day strings of weekend shows to fans throughout the Midwest. They might have changed HEALTH for the better. \nThree years after VOL.4 :: SLAVES OF FEAR\, the L.A. trio’s ferocious entry into the world of heavy music\, HEALTH return with the second half of their DISCO4 series. On the first installment in 2020\, they swapped remixes for original collaborations with Perturbator\, 100 Gecs and JPEGMAFIA. \nA whole lot went to hell in the meantime\, forcing the band to re-invent how they wrote music together. For DISCO4 :: PART II they cut it fast and mean\, recruiting both legends and nascent contenders of heavy music and its many peripheral genres. \nThe centerpiece of DISCO4 :: Part II is the Nine Inch Nails collaboration “ISN’T EVERYONE\,” which re-unites HEALTH with their early-career arena tourmates. The mesh between Trent Reznor’s growls and Jake Duzsik’s gossamer melodies—all over a gigantic synth barrage—feels like a new moment in industrial music. \nOn “COLD BLOOD\,” their latest single with metal titans Lamb of God\, HEALTH show they can devote themselves to a genre and detonate it all in the same track. Its blistering heaviness juxtaposed against album cuts like the raucous “GNOSTIC FLESH/MORTAL HELL” (with noise-rap banshee Backxwash and the virtuosically scabrous trio Ho99o9) or the contemplative “STILL BREATHING” (co-piloted with teenage post-punk experimentalist Ekkstacy)\, demonstrates the breadth of HEALTH’s sonic palette and ability to incorporate what heavy music looks like today and going forward. \nFrom their twitchy 2007 debut\, through the groundbreaking 2012 score for Rockstar Games’ Max Payne 3 and 2015’s DEATH MAGIC\, multi-instrumentalists/producers Jacob Duzsik and John Famiglietti\, and drummer Benjamin Miller\, snuck beauty and rigor into blinding noise. They draped moody violence over trap beats and warehouse rave sounds alike. \nHEALTH are not only making the heaviest\, most genre-obliterating music of their career. They’re documenting just how insane it feels to be alive right now.
