It has been said\, “You don’t just like Joseph Huber’s music. You feel it’s something that the rest of the world needs to hear\, and how criminal it is that it isn’t spreading far and wide.” That sentiment could be related to the fact that the voices which Huber unearths are subtle and take more than a hurried listen to truly absorb. A person who appears reserved and matter-of-fact in everyday speech brings forth songs that are anything but that. \nAs the singer\, songwriter\, performer\, recorder and producer of all of his own material\, Huber has his hands full\, but never seems to miss a beat. And his own ‘solo’ material has now certainly surpassed the output of his past efforts\, both in volume and substance. As one of the founding member of the .357 String Band–a group that would probably fit better in today’s ‘Americana-saturated’ environment than in the early to middle aughts–he’s gradually honed a sound that seems to fill a very real gap within the still-emerging genre. Having progressed\, Huber continues moving onward and upward captivating folks with his sincere and well-crafted songs under his own name along with the impeccable musicianship of his fellow touring partners. Whether it’s irresistible\, fiddle-driven\, dancing tunes or honest\, heart-wrenching “songwriter” songs\, Huber’s songs and shows spans the spectrum of ‘Roots’ music while preferring not to stay within the boundaries of any strict genre classification. \nHis lyricism and introspective writing style has received high acclaim from music enthusiasts looking for a more substantive substitute to much of today’s music. Maintaining a solid touring schedule\, playing all throughout both the U.S. and all around Europe\, Huber continues to gain positive press\, including being listed on L.A. Weekly’s ’10 More Country Artists To Listen To.’ Blue Ridge Outdoor writes\, “Songwriters like Townes Van Zandt\, Chris Smither\, and John Prine can marvel listeners in the simplest of acoustic settings\,…From time to time\, I stumble upon a new singer/songwriter whose work warrants comparison to the luminaries on this list. …Huber’s songwriting has me comparing him to my favorites above.” He’s had the pleasure of sharing the stage with many artists including Tyler Childers; Hackensaw Boys; Scott H Biram; The Tillers; Possessed By Paul James; Dave Simonett; Robert Earl Keen; Ben Nichols; The Tossers; Charlie Parr; Amy Lavere; Horseshoes & Hand Grenades; Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band; Henhouse Prowlers; Keller Williams\, and more… \nAs of now\, Huber has delivered five solo records: ‘Bury Me Where I Fall’ (2010); ‘Tongues Of Fire’ (2012)\, ‘The Hanging Road’ (2014); and ‘The Suffering Stage’ (2017)\, ‘Moondog’ (2019) and now 2021 give us ‘The Downtowner’–Huber’s latest effort which rollicks between social and personal spheres while mixing elements of rock and folk music that fans will immediately see as maintaining a solid continuity of sound and attitude with his previous two albums–rollicking between the feelings of freedom and severity\, with both wit and earnestness. \nMK Ultra \nMK Ultra (est. 2021) is a unique collaboration of Ben Miller (Ben Miller Band) and Pat Kay (The Kay Brothers) born out of the great pandemic. You see…here’s what happens when two fellas like this spend too much time in their shops and start playing “I’ll show you mine if you show me yours.” Miller & Kay\, both renowned torchbearers for Ozark mountain music tradition heretofore\, have basically built themselves some kind of jangle-stomp-time machine. And in it\, together\, have embarked on a journey exploring hillbilly music from a distant future. Banjos meet Synthesizers… Dulcimers meet Wobble… Strange flashing lights… Unexplained phenomena… These industrious builders of cobbled homemade instruments showcase some of their most bizarre implements & soundscapes. The future of the past is here\, and it’s only weird the first time. \nDriveway Thriftdwellers \n“Emotionally ripe\, old school country.” – Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. \n“Like a vintage yard sale that Merle Haggard might have thrown.” Isthmus. \n“Rugged\, straightforward country songwriting.” Tone Madison. \nVocals\, Guitar / Jon Knudson\nPedal Steel\, Vocals / Ryan Knudson\nLead Guitar\, Vocals / Kyle Rightley\nBass\, Vocals / Aaron Collins\nDrums\, Vocals / Jon Storey URL:https://www.high-noon.com/event/joseph-huber-mk-ultra-and-driveway-thriftdwellers/ LOCATION:High Noon Saloon\, 701 East Washington Avenue\, Madison\, 53703 ATTACH;FMTTYPE=image/jpeg:https://www.high-noon.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/MKUltraHuber-HNS-WEB.jpg END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;TZID=America/Chicago:20230119T200000 DTEND;TZID=America/Chicago:20230119T233000 DTSTAMP:20240328T113239 CREATED:20221129T181055Z LAST-MODIFIED:20221129T181419Z UID:8046-1674158400-1674171000@www.high-noon.com SUMMARY:The Almas and Left of Reason DESCRIPTION:  \n\nCOVID-19 POLICY\nBased on the latest local guidelines\, attendees are no longer required to provide proof of negative COVID-19 test AND/OR vaccination for entry into this event. Raine was a contestant on season 20 of The Voice\, has been featured on PBS’s 30 Minute Music Hour\, and most recently was featured in NPR’s “Best 2021 Tiny Desk Contest.” When Raine first picked up a guitar at 11 years old\, she found a home for the stories she had always felt the need to tell. Her lyricism is potent and poetic\, and her arrangements fill in the cracks that language can’t. As a teenager\, she spent her evenings playing at blues clubs with musicians three times her age. Now\, she writes and arranges all the parts for her own 9-piece band. Their music is steeped in sounds and lyricism of improvisational rock and roll\, reggae\, soul\, carribean jazz\, bluegrass\, americana\, and folk\, among others – if it has to be contained to a category\, World music suits it best. Chock-full of impressive songwriting ability and instrumental virtuosity\, and with two released full-length studio albums\, a live album and a third studio album in the chute\, this 6-piece ensemble of artistry has nowhere to go but up. \nJoe Dunn – Guitar / Vocals\nDemitri Rallis – Guitar / Vocals\nDanny Q – Saxaphone\nJimmy Geisinger – Bass\nDoug Christianson – Percussion\nGeoffrey Randall – Drums\nKevin Dorsey – Keys \nSince their first show in late 2012\, a major buzz about the band Frogleg has been spreading through the music scene stemming from their ever-growing weekly tradition\, “Frogleg Thursdays @ Bunkers” in downtown Minneapolis. After four years\, Frogleg closed the book on that chapter of their musical path. Their send off from Bunker’s was met with a series of sold out appearances at the club counting down to the final show. \nSince departing from their home gig\, the band has headlined shows at most of the major venues in Minneapolis from the Cabooze to the Skyway Theatre downtown as well as an appearance on the First Avenue mainroom stage. Outside of Minneapolis\, Frogleg has expanded their touring circuit considerably\, now including many of the friendly mountain states as well as the greater Midwest. Frogleg has shared the stage with Steven Tyler\, Jeff Austin Band\, New Orleans Suspects\, Devon Allman\, Orgone\, Raw Oyster Cult\, Samantha Fish\, Allie Kral\, Robert Randolph and has played multiple dates with Melvin Seals and the Jerry Garcia Band. \nKnown for their songwriting and improvisational live performances\, Frogleg would be best described as a soul band\, as their influences are not drawn from one specific genre. A typical Frogleg show usually features a unique blend of Funk\, Reggae\, Rock and Jazz exploration. \nFrogleg’s debut\, self-titled album\, released in April of 2015\, first pressing sold out in under six months. The band followed up in 2017 with the release of ‘Busy Checking In’. The release show was met with much excitement pairing Frogleg with George Porter Jr. and Jon Cleary on the beautiful Como Dockside Pavilion. The album is seeing lots of attention from national radio\, charting on stations from California to New York! The band followed up their release by pressing the album to a double vinyl and adding on some bonus live tracks from an in studio radio performance. The vinyl release show quickly sold out – something that Frogleg seems to be making a habit of. Do yourself a favor and go see a Frogleg show! \nChicken Wire Empire \nBorn from the Wisconsin music scene\, Chicken Wire Empire rides the line between traditional bluegrass and the contemporary. Its members have spent a lifetime honing their craft\, with deep roots in tradition and music throughout the midwest scene. Their 2022 release “Fresh Pickles” features all original music by Minnesota songsmith Chris Castino (Big Wu)\, reimagined in Chicken Wire Empire’s style. It is graced by guests Peter Rowan\, Sam Bush\, Jerry Douglas\, Andy Hall\, Tim O’Brien\, and Nick Forester. With love from their local scene\, friends\, and families\, Chicken Wire Empire looks to the future\, with a goal to strengthen Wisconsin’s bluegrass scene\, and further the appreciation of acoustic music. At 41 years old\, he’s played on a dozen albums\, recorded over 100 songs\, and performed countless shows as a sideman\, frontman\, and solo/duo act. \nWith his new album\, “Echoes in the Treetops\,” Hall makes it clear that inside his chest beats the raging heart of a rocker. The seven-song collection has the fire\, the effervescence of a debut album\, but it’s seasoned with the soul and perspective of a high-mileage road warrior and the wisdom of a one-time party animal who saw the light and found sobriety five years ago. \nA member of the Smokin’ Bandits from 2004-13\, Hall also has played in the White Iron Band since 2009 and toured with Nicholas David from 2014-17. \nIn 2013\, he formed Gregg Hall and the Wrecking Ball\, recording three albums of his take on outlaw country backed by top-flight La Crosse bandmates: “This\, That and the Land” in 2016\, “The Mrs. Hippy Sessions\, Vol. 1” in 2017 and “True Story” in 2020. Going country didn’t exactly go against Hall’s nature. His first concert\, after all\, was Johnny Cash\, and he named his second son Waylon\, age 7 (he also has a 14-year-old son\, Shay). \nOver the years he’s shared bills with Todd Snider\, Jackson Browne\, Bill Miller\, Shooter Jennings\, Little Feat\, Dave Simonett\, Whey Jennings\, Trampled by Turtles\, just to name a few. Co-produced by Lane and fellow singer-songwriter\, Jonathan Tyler\, this emotional tour-de-force was recorded at Matt Pence’s Echo Lab studio in Denton\, Texas as well as at Club Roar with Collin Dupuis in Nashville\, Tennessee. Blending potent lyrics\, unbridled blues guitars and vintage Sixties country-pop swagger\, Lane’s new music will resonate as easily with Lana Del Rey and Jenny Lewis fans as those of Neil Young and Tom Petty. \nHighway Queen is a journey through heartbreak that takes exquisite turns. The record begins with a whiskey-soaked homage to Lane’s hometown (“700\,000 Rednecks”) and ends on the profoundly raw “Forever Lasts Forever\,” where Lane mourns a failed marriage — the “lighter shade of skin” left behind from her wedding ring. On “Forever” and the confessional “Muddy Waters\,” Lane’s lyrics align her with perceptive songwriters like Nick Lowe and Cass McCombs. Elsewhere\, “Companion” is pure Everly Brothers’ dreaminess (“I would spend a lifetime/ Playing catch you if I can”). She goes on a Vegas bender on the rollicking “Jackpot\,” fights last-call blues (“Foolish Heart”) and tosses off brazen one-liners at a backroom piano (“Big Mouth”). \n“Love is the most unavoidable thing in the world\,” Lane says. “The person you pick could be half set-up to destroy your life with their own habits — I’ve certainly experienced that before and taken way too long to get out of that mistake.” \nIn 2014\, Lane’s second album All or Nothin’ (New West) solidified her sandpaper voice beneath a ten-gallon hat as the new sound and look of outlaw country music. Produced by Dan Auerbach\, the record’s bluesy Western guitars paired with Lane’s Dusty Springfield-esque voice earned glowing reviews from NPR\, the Guardian and Rolling Stone. In three years since her Walk of Shame debut\, Lane said she was living most of the year on the road. \nGrowing up\, Lane used to watch her father pave asphalt during blistering South Carolina summers. She’d sit on the roller (“what helps smooth out the asphalt”) next to a guy named Rooster and divvy out Hardee’s lunch orders for the workers. “My father thought he was a country singer\,” Lane laughs. “He partied hard at night\, but by 6:30 AM he was out on the roads in 100-degree weather.” That’s the southern work ethic\, she says. “We didn’t have a lot of money\, but I was privileged with the knowledge of how to work hard\, how to learn and to succeed when things aren’t set up for me.” Creativity was an unthinkable luxury\, she adds. “When people told me I should try to get a record deal for songs I was writing\, I was like\, ‘that’s cute — I’ve got to be at work at 10 A.M.'” \n“Becoming a songwriter is one of the most selfish things I’ve ever done\,” Lane says plainly. She describes writing her first song at age 25 like it was a necessary act of self-preservation after a devastating breakup. Many of her early songs\, she said on Shame and Nothin\,’ were about the fleetingness of relationships she believed were permanent\, she says. Lane’s main line of work in those days was a fashion entrepreneur (she’s currently the owner of Nashville’s vintage clothing boutique High Class Hillbilly). It brought her to cities around the country\, New York to Los Angeles to Nashville. And like a true wanderer\, Lane’s sound crisscrosses musical genres with ease\, while the lonesome romantic in her remains. Even a soft song like\, “Send The Sun\,” with its lilting downward strum\, is flush with bittersweet emotion. “Darling\, we’re staring at the same moon\,” Lane sings lovingly. “I used to say that to my ex\,” she says with cheerful stoicism\, “to try to brighten the long nights\, stay positive.” \nHighway Queen is poised to be Lane’s mainstream breakthrough. “Am I excited to spend years of my life in a van\, away from family and friends? No\, but I’m excited to share my songs\, so they’ll reach people and help them get through whatever they’re going through. To me\, that’s worth it.” \n“Lay You Down” is one of those unexpected moments for Lane. “That song was inspired by something Levon Helm’s wife posted on Facebook when he was sick with cancer\,” Lane says. “I was just so moved by her telling the world how much love he felt from people writing to them\, and moved that because of the Internet\, I was able to see that love — even from a distance.” The song became surreal for Lane and her band when her longtime guitarist\, Alex Munoz\, was diagnosed with cancer while they were playing it. “It deepened my perspective and the importance of keeping everyone safe\,” says Lane. \nOn the record cover\, Lane looks out on wide\, unowned Texan plains\, leaning on the fearsome horns of a massive steer. Wearing a vintage Victorian dress\, the stark photo invokes a time before highways existed. The symbolism isn’t lost on Lane. Highway Queen was a pioneering moment for her as an artist. \n“I was always a smart girl\, always had to yell to be heard\,” she says\, “But this was the first time in my career where I decided how things were going to go; I was willing to take the heat.” Lane included the bonus track “Champion” as a small testament to that empowerment. “It makes a point\,” Lane says with a smile\, “That I appreciate what you’re saying\, but get the fuck out of my way.” URL:https://www.high-noon.com/event/nikki-lane/ LOCATION:High Noon Saloon\, 701 East Washington Avenue\, Madison\, 53703 ATTACH;FMTTYPE=image/png:https://www.high-noon.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/UPDATED-Nikki-Lane-Web-Header.png END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;TZID=America/Chicago:20221214T200000 DTEND;TZID=America/Chicago:20221214T223000 DTSTAMP:20240328T113239 CREATED:20220829T183352Z LAST-MODIFIED:20221214T223349Z UID:7816-1671048000-1671057000@www.high-noon.com SUMMARY:Nerd Nite DESCRIPTION:  \n\nCOVID-19 POLICY\nBased on the latest local guidelines\, attendees are no longer required to provide proof of negative COVID-19 test AND/OR vaccination for entry into this event. The Halluci Nation\, takes its name from a phrase coined by John Trudell\, to describe the vast global community of people who remember at their core what it means to be human. As a visionary\nartist and activist\, Trudell recognized the connection between his accomplishments and what ATCR did intuitively through music and art. \nTrudell’s voice was the first heard on Tribe’s last record\, We Are The Halluci Nation\, and will\, fittingly\, be the first you hear on The Halluci Nation’s upcoming record\, One More Saturday Night. The album is a love letter to the Electric Pow Wow gatherings launched at Ottawa’s Babylon nightclub in 2007. It represents an imagined denouement to the biweekly Saturday-night parties that ended abruptly in 2017\, without ever getting the proper send-off. One More Saturday Night thus pays homage to the parties’ energy and momentum that elevated The Halluci Nation to this pivotal point in their career of fully mastering their own music style while also moving beyond club music; or “mixing dance music with dance music\,” as Bear Witness succinctly puts it. \n“We wanted to pay homage to the Electric Pow Wow and wrap that whole decade of experience up and close the cycle\, and in doing so give direct coordinates of where the future was headed. In a nutshell\, that’s what this album is about\,” says Bear. “We just wanted to make a party record\, as well\, one that people could dance to while still having the strong message we are known for.” \nAs was the case with its proud legacy\, The Halluci Nation’s future revolves around collaboration. From hip-hop star\, Yasiin Bey (AKA Mos Def)\, to the Indigenous Australian band\, OKA\, to the Wayuu-Colombian powerhouse\, Lido Pimienta\, the group has always sought out artists from around the world who would join the Halluci Nation family to form a like minded community as well as an international indigenous alliance. The upcoming record will be no exception–with features as inspired and unpredictable as the music from Texas “electro-cumbia” producer\, El Dusty\, Anishnaabeg drum group\, Chippewa Travellers\, Maori artist\, Rob Ruha\, Inuk singer\, Tanya Tagaq\, and round-dance/R&B singer Antoine\, among many others. \n“We wanted to take the music to another place\,” says 2oolman. “We showed a little bit of our ambitious side on this record and we got to do a lot of songs that we’d been wanting to do for a long time. And this is just the beginning. I wouldn’t be surprised if you heard The Halluci Nation produce a project for someone else. We’ve got so much more coming.” \nThis is a beginning\, not an end\, after all. The Halluci Nation maintains focus on what they feel they can impact most: how Indigenous people are seen. Through groundbreaking stage shows and ever-changing visuals\, Bear Witness and 2oolman are working to create media that reflects today’s Indigenous identity. By partnering with striking visual artists such as Whess Harman\, Saige Mukash and Cedar-Eve Peters along with a growing community of musical collaborators. They see themselves simply as contributors to a necessary conversation around a subtle and complex representation of the contemporary Indigenous experience. They had the full support of revered veteran indie label Saddle Creek. They’d received favorable notices from outlets such as the NME\, the Guardian\, and Stereogum. They had an energetic live show which was sure to convert a sea of devotees\, and an international tour booked to prove it. Most crucially\, they had an album of winning and memorable rock songs\, polished to a fine sheen by legendary producer Rob Schnapf. You could not fault these five fresh-faced youngsters for betting it all\, but their big mistake was one that no musician could have seen coming : their release date\, March 6th\, 2020. Within days\, the world Disq was poised to conquer ceased to exist.\n\nUndaunted by a storm of misfortunate which would have crushed a lesser band\, Disq now returns to take what is rightfully theirs\, with their sophomore effort Desperately Imagining Someplace Quiet\, a record which reaffirms the charms of Collector while pushing the sound and dynamic of the band in exciting and unexpected new directions. Rather than splintering and surrendering to their cursed circumstance\, Disq has emerged a stronger band\, more daring and more defiant\, ready to finish the job. It is fitting that the clever backronym effectively makes this the band’s self-titled album\, as it introduces the public to a new Disq\, a band both seasoned by experience and newly invigorated toward vivid new heights.\n\nThough initially formed as an extension of the lifelong friendship between guitarist Isaac DeBroux-Slone and bassist Raina Bock\, Disq has evolved into a far more democratic and egalitarian organization\, as Desperately Imagining Someplace Quiet finds guitarists Logan Severson and Shannon Conor splitting singing and songwriting duties with the aforementioned DeBroux-Slone and Bock. Such an approach could have easily fallen into the trap of “satisfying everyone\, pleasing no one\,” resulting in committee-approved music devoid of any personality or rough edges\, but happily\, the opposite is true.\n\nPushing play on Desperately Imagining Someplace Quiet\, it is easy to imagine that it is the year 1998\, and your cool older sister has returned from her freshman year at college only to hand you the sort of mind-altering mixtape out of which lifelong rock fanatics are born. It is the sort of record Beck might have made in his prime\, if you swapped out the hip-hop and delta blues of Odelay for midwestern emo\, Scottish power-pop\, and the sort of all-American indie that functions as “classic rock” for this cherubic cohort.\n\nA song such as “Prize Contest Life” initially scans as a straightforward and easygoing pop treat\, only to take a startling detour into the sort of cacophonous noise jam on which Yo La Tengo made their name. Rousing opener “Civilization Four” introduces itself with a dizzying collage of bells and whistles\, before a spoken sample helpfully announces “music\,” and the band lurches into a glam-grunge riff with enough Stones-y swagger to earn a place in the next Scorsese soundtrack. On understated closer “Hitting a Nail with a BB Gun\,” Bock sounds like Kurt Vile fronting Supertramp right when the edible hits. In between\, there are heartfelt rock anthems (“The Hardest Part”)\, acoustic lullabies (“Meant to Be”)\, and yearning alt-country gems (“If Only)\, to name just three of the detours along Disq’s winding road to long-deferred satisfaction.\n\nWrangling a melange of styles such as this is no simple task\, but the record is held together by the powerful yet nimble rhythm section of Bock and drummer Stu Manley\, whose muscular and hyperactive playing alternately keeps these adventurous compositions tethered firmly to the Earth and sends them soaring into stratosphere. Producer Matt Schuessler (the recording engineer of Collector making the most of his promotion) rarely lets a verse or chorus go by without adding some new sonic sparkle\, keeping the arrangements an ever-shifting kaleidoscope of textures and moods. If there is a record in 2022 which squeezes more ideas into 41 minutes\, then that record could surely only be the unlistenable mess that Desperately Imagining Someplace Quiet avoids becoming so deftly.\n\nThings being how they are in the world today\, the idea of finding “someplace quiet” feels like an increasingly remote possibility\, and the act of imagining such a place does\, indeed\, feel more and more desperate. Listening to Disq navigate the myriad twists and turns of their new album can feel akin to an attempted processing of our endless poly-crisis\, where each new catastrophe and atrocity jostle for position at the top of the timeline. With their new album\, Disq take a valiant stand against the temptation of complacency. As for that “someplace quiet?” It will have to wait… it’s about to get loud in here.
