What do you get when you cross acoustic guitars, banjo, mandolin, lap steel and bass with roughhewn vocals and music by Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, The Band, The Byrds and a slew of country-folk originals by one of the most renowned songwriters in Wisconsin?

You get American classics played authentically, with feeling.

You get old songs with new interpretations, and new songs you’ll never hear anywhere else.

You get a sound that’s instantly familiar, a sound that is “Ragged, but Right,” as the band likes to describe it.

In short, you get Phil Davis and the Stone Prairie Band.

Featuring Phil Davis on guitars and lead vocals, Peter Tropman on banjo and vocals, Sheldon Bey on bass, autoharp, mandolin, and lap steel, Pauli Ryan on cajon and percussion, and Anita Germann on acoustic guitar and vocals, Davis and Stone Prairie bring something refreshingly recognizable and timeless to the Dane County region. American roots music played in the spirit it was written, interpreted with passion and deep respect for the folk tradition from which it originated.

Phil Davis leads the band and writes the band’s original songs. Recently christened ‘Madison Musical Royalty’ by 77 Square, Davis has been a local musical fixture since the mid ‘1970s. Fronting the popular club band Buzz Gunderson and, in the 1980s, Atlantic recording artist Fire Town, Davis has recently emerged with old band mate Butch Vig in a new international country-rock group, The Emperors of Wyoming. Their debut record was released by Proper Records UK. In the meantime, he has also written new songs for and performs with The Stone Prairie Band, bringing a career’s worth of passion, creativity and professionalism to the local music scene.
