Panchromatic Steel Band
Panchromatic Steel Band
Madison's homegrown steeldrum band. Authentic soca, calypso, jazz, classical and popular music played on steel pans and accompanied by a smokin' rhythm section.

The steeldrum, or “steel pan,” is heralded as the only acoustic musical instrument newly developed in the 20th century. It is the national instrument of Trinidad and Tobago, a small but culturally rich island nation in the south Caribbean off the coast of Venezuela. The instrument is literally a sawed-off 55-gallon oil drum with the top stretched into a bowl shape and painstakingly hand-hammered to create tone-producing centers, which are struck by rubber-tipped mallets.

Originating in the 1940's, the steel pan is the product of the wide availability of discarded oil drums in Trinidad as a result of the presence of U.S./British naval bases and the country's vast oil and petrochemical industry. That, and some serious creativity, ingenuity and craftsmanship by the instrument's earliest practitioners.

The use of the pan became popularized in musical styles unique to Trinidad including “calypso,” a folk music known for story-telling and social commentary, and “soca,” a high-energy dance music born of the 1960s that incorporated elements from Indian classical music as well as American funk. The instrument has also been applied to wide range of other musical styles, including classical, reggae and popular music.

Founded in 2016 by Chad Bartell and Josh Pultorak, Panchromatic Steel hopes to honor and bring recognition to the steel pan by respectfully applying it to a variety of creative, improvised music.
