Who: Labor Day Punk Picnic / Dr. Manhattan / Direct Hit! / The Warhawks / The Gusto / The American Dead
When: Mon. September 6 8:00PM
Cost: $6 cover
Additional Info: 21 and up.

Dr. Manhattan is a post-punk band from Wauconda, Illinois. “Halfway between Mars and the smoke shop, Dr. Manhattan are a funky bunch of space cadets. I mean this in a good way. The Vagrant signees make art rock that's post-punk more than anything else, but it's charming, clever, intelligible and precisely erratic to the core….The first full-length from the Illinois foursome is a grasping 11-song punch. No, literally, it can sock you in the face.” (Julia Conny, absolutepunk)

Pop-punk outfit Direct Hit started out as a side project for Nick Woods of the Madison-Milwaukee band The Box Social. “One of Milwaukee's smartest pop-punk bands... Direct Hit's zippy, clean-around-the-edges songs are testaments to brevity, breezing by in just two or three minutes, all hooks and bridges, no filler. In that respect, they're throwbacks to the mid-'90s, Warped Tour-ready SoCal pop-punk of Epitaph and Lookout!” (Shepherd Express)

The Warhawks play punk rock and thrash.

The Gusto provides melodic punk rock and roll with hints of hardcore and metal emanating from the guitars.

The American Dead bash out country-punk tales of drinking, fighting, passing out, and doing it all over again the next night.

Who: The Ragbirds / The Cosmonauts / The Big Strong Men
When: Wed. September 8 8:30PM
Cost: $7 cover
Additional Info: 21 and up.

Ask The Ragbirds how to describe their hard-to-define Folk Rock and World fusion and they’ll tell you it’s “infectious global groove”. Led by fiery front-woman Erin Zindle (called “Highly Impressive” by USA TODAY), they put on a show that is designed to engage the audience on many levels - to get people thinking, listening and dancing.
The musical roots of The Ragbirds sound are complex - with Gypsy, Middle-Eastern, Americana, Rock, and Latin influences, all stirred with a Celtic fiddler’s bow. In live performances the band incorporates variations on traditional African drum pieces, each member trading their instrument for a hand drum. The Ragbirds craft their songs carefully weaving joy and hope into honest lyrics, while keeping an ear always open to improvisation. The songs carry a positive message that appeals to listeners of all ages. For all the intensity of their live show, this is a band that is not afraid to show their softer side with acoustic tunes that are anything but typical folk.

The Cosmonauts play funky blues and rock n' roll.

Who: The Getaway Drivers / Invincible Hi-Fi
When: Fri. September 10 5:30PM
Cost: $5 cover
Additional Info: 21 and up.

The Getaway Drivers radiate edgy, melodious, alt-rock energy. Gritty western blues, lush pop ballads, driving progressive rock, sweet-tea country nostalgia and even an oddly majestic instrumental somehow find common ground in the silky, dark acoustic guitar framework; the pairing of cracked-leather and mercury smooth vocals; a personalized cello style fusing orchestral grandeur with possessed, beautifully-fractured harmonics; bluesy, growling electric guitar, spooky-sweet touches of mandolin, lap steel, and fiddle, and a relentlessly solid rhythm section. "...well beyond the standard heartland-rock sound..." (Scott Gordon, The Onion) "...The Getaway Drivers are clearly onto something...they could find themselves making inroads into a much larger market... (Tom Laskin, Isthmus)

September 10 9:30PM
Cost: $6 cover
Additional Info: 18 and up. $8 For Ages 18 - 20

The Madison-based five piece, Steez, is - in the simplest terms and the most convenient definitions – a funk band, a jamband, a fusion band, a disco-fanged multi-beast, and a basket case. Churning out their self-described Creepfunk, a high energy, danceable variety of funk — one uniquely laced with electronic and improvisational sensibilities – Steez has garnered a loyal following throughout the Midwest. After receiving repeated acclaim for their live performances, which typically include a seamless weaving of thoughtfully composed originals and crowd pleasing covers spanning from Madonna to clever obscurities like Genialistid (Estonia). Steez was featured in the December 09 issue of Relix as a band “on the verge,” and most recently Steez was named one of the 10 most influential bands to come out of Madison in the last decade.

September 12 3:30PM
Cost: $5 cover
Additional Info: 18 and up.

Anthony Lamarr is best known as “The Soundshaker”, beat boxer extraordinaire. However, lately he has launched into the realm of rock n’ roll performing with Mike Droho & The Compass Rose. Lamarr’s latest project finds him in the contemporary world of R&B with the release of his solo album “Opening Night: A Symphony From Sorrow". “His music will make your emotions skip a beat as you fathom life and adversity, fusing inspiration and refining a vivid tomorrow.”

The Lucas Cates Band is an original acoustic rock band. Their music includes a wide range of genres, including rock, pop, alt-country, folk, jazz, funk, R&B, jam and more. Fusing three- and occasionally four-part harmonies the band creates a big sound. They are a singer/songwriter group that has the energy of a rock band that jams.

Aaron Williams and the Hoodoo’s music is unwavering. They filter blues, soul, roots, and rock through a prism of emotional authenticity. “The driving guitar and beat are the hallmark of these rocking blues lads. Williams’ guitar licks are sweltering and the groove backing it makes your heart pump quickly...It’s non-stop action…" (Blues Blast Magazine)

“…Ida Jo has been embellishing the pop compositions of local band the Compass Rose with dollops of string work for years now. On her debut CD,"Providence", her use of violin is original and unexpected…a reminder that pop instrumentation still has lots of boundaries to be pushed. To that end, Ida Jo's violin is a welcome shove.” (Rich Albertoni, Isthmus)

Trevor’s music lives somewhere between the anthemic grooves of Matisyahu and the gentle melodies of Jack Johnson.

Cas Haley’s pop-inflected island grooves and crystalline voice earned him a second-place finish on America’s Got Talent. Elements of soul, blues, and pop swirl through Cas’s strong reggae beats.

”This Mexican-American all-girl trio mixes rockabilly, country, Texas blues, and a dash of the Smiths (mostly in Nina Diaz's Morrissey-influenced vocals) into a sound that's melancholy and rockin' at once.” (Phil Freeman, All Music Guide)

“There’s no debate that frontwoman Nina Diaz, whose lyrics are often inspired by literary heroes Oscar Wilde and Sylvia Plath and delivered with aplomb, is the star of the group. But the indispensable rhythm section of rock ‘n’ roll lifers Jenn Alva, and Phanie Diaz gives the band much of its boisterous charm. Girl in a Coma is the best bet to put San Antonio back on the charts as the trio of young tattooed Latinas deliver their hybrid of propulsive punk rhythms and edgy pop melodies with refreshing enthusiasm.” (Austin American-Statesman)

Hacienda Press:

“Combining Tex-Mex, straight up rock ‘n’ roll and Americana, Hacienda burst onto the indie-rock scene…Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys produced the band’s debut effort, as well as its latest album. Demonstrating a stronger sense of the band’s garage-rock style...” (NPR’s World Cafe)

Sick of Sarah is a power pop band based in Minneapolis. Their "strong-voiced punky girl-rock" has drawn comparisons to bands such as The Breeders and Sleater-Kinney.

Little Red wolf plays a feisty mix of folk, power-pop, and chamber-rock.

Even if you’ve never heard of Bascom Hill, chances are you’ve heard their music.
Who: Weedeater / The Antiprism / Romero
When: Mon. September 20 8:30PM
Cost: $10 cover
Additional Info: 21 and up.

“Weedeater is a sludge metal trio from the seaside city of Wilmington, N.C., the band oozes thick, incidental drones before hammering into belligerent mid-tempo thrash built primarily around metaphors involving, well, weed. More pragmatic than Sleep and more pummeling than Bongzilla, Weedeater are heavy, fluid, and direct. Bassist and frontman "Dixie" Dave Collins howls as if the bong resin covering his larynx were scraped clean with razorblades soaked in brown whiskey, and guitarist Dave "Shep" Shepherd saturates the space between Collins' meathook bass melodies with ample fuzz. Drummer Keith "Keko" Kirkum eviscerates cymbals with brutal, short-armed slaps. Weedeater traffic in uppers and downers, convictions and addictions: In short, the band lives up to its name.” (Grayson Currin, Pitchfork)

The Antiprism provides mind and string bending stoner/metal that pulls influences from the last 4 decades. Riff driven, stealing a bit from the NWoBHM, but with enough originality & modern metal touches to garner a spot in today's mess. Dual vocals, double bass, sometimes off kilter beats and seasoned trade off leads. Melodic, heavy riffs intertwine with urgent, angry vocals and occult lyrics. The Antiprism explores the wide girth in the middle of the stoner spectrum. Circling metal extremities but never wholly succumbing.

Romero plays melodic stoner/metal with an old school twist. Their front man, Jeffrey Mundt, spent most the 90’s behind the drum kit for a variety of bands including Thug, and punk legends Naked Aggression. With his most recent venture, Romero, Mundt has been putting his long-time guitar play and songwriting to good use.

Who: Built To Spill / Revolt Revolt
When: Tue.

Revolt Revolt has a sound that recalls classic NW guitar bands in its heavier moments and the best of 90’s indie rock as the hooks & melodies pile in. Dark and brooding in spots, breezy in others, chordata is a self-assured debut by a band just hitting their stride.

September 22 9:00PM
Cost: $12 cover
Additional Info: 21 and up.

Nation Beat are rhythm gatherers, harvesting the fruit of 500 years of cultural crossbreeding, which is why the sounds of the northeast of Brazil and the southern United States blend together so seamlessly; NPR's All Things Considered music writer Banning Eyre calls them "the most original and alluring fusion group I have heard in years." Time Out Chicago writes: “…Nation Beat specializes in Brazilian [maracatu] and New Orleans second-line funk… …the obvious affection for their sources and sheer moxie they bring make Nation Beat’s sound near addictive.”

The Handphibians play the music of Brasilian Carnaval in live performances that are sure to make your mind take a back seat to your dancing feet! The Handphibians percussion is modeled on the Brasilian baterias of the Escolas de Samba in Rio de Janeiro, Blocos Afros of Salvador, & the Maracatu Nações of Recife.
Who: Menomena / Suckers / Tu Fawning
When: Fri. September 24 9:30PM
Cost: $14 cover / $12 advance
Additional Info: 18 and up.

Menomena are an experimental rock band from Portland, Oregon.

They assembled much of their debut album, I Am the Fun Blame Monster!, by using a computer program dubbed Deeler and developed by one of the bandmembers. The album's unusual packaging was in the form of a flipbook depicting the bandmembers performing. Menomena released it themselves on a very limited basis in 2003, then signed to the Portland independent label FILMguerrero for a national release in October 2004, accompanied by a national tour.

Before signing to Barsuk, the band issued Under an Hour, a three-movement instrumental record that had originally accompanied a 2004 modern dance performance in Portland. Things were a little more straightforward, however, on Friend and Foe (cover art nonwithstanding, which was designed by Craig Thompson, author of the graphic novel Blankets), which came out in early 2007. The band continued with this more focused approach, and in 2010 released their fourth album, Mines.

Brooklyn quartet, Suckers, construct songs around uplifting group chants and harmonies and an at times dub-like, always joyful synth-and-percussion based instrumentation (with some bass providing the low-end, tons of shakers).Scene-wise, you wouldn’t be off placing them square in the colorful, fertile circle of MGMT, Chairlift, and Amazing Baby, based on how they dress.

Tu Fawning is a project of Joe Haege and Corrina Repp. Having collaborated on their own, indvidual projects, Tu Fawning took shape.
The end result is a hybrid of their own individual sounds coming together, but it feels and sounds so natural, as well as creating something more than the sum of it's parts.

Repp has found herself finally uninhibited to sing in front of some antiquated tribal music of hymns and ballads. Together, Haege and Repp are fully realizing their palette of piano, drums, percussion, guitar, vocals and samples, mutually and individually, they are finally able to tell the types of stories they have always wanted to, both lyrically and musically.

Who: Those Darlins & / These United States / with special guests / Turbo Fruits / The Deep Dark Woods
When: Sat. September 25 9:00PM
Cost: $12 cover
Additional Info: 18 and up.

Those Darlins are a pop group, if they are any one thing, which doesn't mean anybody with ears can't hear the country and rock 'n' roll in their sound and stance. Or maybe this trio of young women, who live a long stone's throw from Nashville, Tennessee in the college town of Murfreesboro, are punks straight out of London or Cleveland, 1977.

Informed by Nashville and its intersecting indie, pop, and country scenes—and aware of the twisted tradition of Appalachian roots music that stretches back beyond the Carter Family, Those Darlins are, nevertheless, not of Nashville. They write their own songs, record in New York City with producer Jeff Curtin (whose credits include Vampire Weekend's debut), and talk convincingly about female empowerment, music history, and egalitarian ideals of performance and business. And, in practice, they are rockers. In the backyard of their shared suburban house—which is littered with musical instruments and cast-off whiskey bottles, they stick wires in the spindle holes of old LPs, hang them from the magnolia tree, and shoot them with BB guns. They're good shots.

Combining Devendra Banhart's "new weird American" eccentricity, Flaming Lips-influenced electronic bells and whistles, and a Wilco-esque twanginess, These United States create a musical melting pot that blends together a wide array of influences.

Turbo Fruits at times comes across like Credence Clearwater Revial, if they played at hardcore punk tempos. They let fly with super-strength riffs that are part fuzzed-out roar, part Nashvillian twinkle, and yet never seem to fall back on standard-issue garage-rock retroism.

The Deep Dark Woods approach their instruments with studied respect for the honored traditions of the shadowy side of roots music. Their latest release "Winter Hours" recently won Best Roots Group at the 2009 Western Canadian Music Awards, and Ensemble of the Year at the 2009 Canadian Folk Music Awards.

Who: Elf Power / Icarus Himself
When: Mon. September 27 8:00PM
Cost: $10 cover / $8 advance
Additional Info: 18 and up.

The Athens, GA-based Elf Power emerged as part of the second wave of bands linked to the Elephant 6 Recording Company collective, a coterie of likeminded lo-fi indie groups -- including the Apples (In Stereo), Neutral Milk Hotel, and the Olivia Tremor Control -- who shared musicians, ideas, and sensibilities.

Elf Power's ninth album, "In A Cave," blasts them past the familiar territories of their previous records and lands them on exciting new terrain. Granted, the Elves' sound is still founded on the bedrock attributes that make them memorable: otherworldly lyrical stances, their easy way with melody, and an overall eclectic approach towards making music. "In A Cave" finds Elf Power filtering their powerful live sound through varied, experimental recording processes and approaches; the new album plays like a spirited, exploratory series of treatments on the tried-and-true Elf Power sound.

Icarus Himself takes the refined distortion of the National Beekeepers and combines it with his wry and quirky vocals to make what can only be categorized as basement tape beauty.

His new EP “Mexico” reviewed by Bryan Sanchez from Delusions Of Adequacy: “…His newest recording, a five-song set of spectacular music, the Mexico EP is everything anyone could have asked for and more. Sounds of folk, disguised as electro-pop, disguised as psych rock, disguised as indie rock propel the release into a strength that's never foreboding. No, instead, Whetro and his two bandmates, new drummer Brad Kolberg and baritone guitar specialist Karl Christenson, spin off as many fantastically drastic twists and modifications to thrill every sense…”

September 29 8:30PM
Cost: $14 cover / $12 advance
Additional Info: 18 and up.

Often compared to the early lo-fi eclecticism of Beck, Blitzen Trapper's music went through various genres with each record, from Neil Young-inspired alt.country to experimental pop, indie folk, and art rock.

Before signing a record contract in 2007, the band released three albums on its own dime: an eponymous effort in 2003, Field Rexx in 2005, and the highly acclaimed Wild Mountain Nation in 2007. The latter album landed the group a record deal with Sub Pop. Their latest album, Destroyer of the Void, was released in June.

Who: Peter Mulvey -- Bicycle Tour 2010 / Brianna Lane
When: Sun. October 3 5:00PM
Cost: $12 cover
Additional Info: 21 and up.

Over the past 20 years Milwaukee native, Peter Mulvey, has pursued a restless, eclectic path as a writer and musician – immersing himself in Tin PanAlley jazz, modern acoustic, poetry, narrative, and Americana stylings. “I like making records,” reflects songwriter Peter Mulvey, “but my job is the live show: getting up in a room and taking people somewhere.” The Irish Times writes: “Peter Mulvey is consistently the most original and dynamic of the US singer-songwriters to tour these shores. A phenomenal performer with huge energy, a quick fire, quirky take on life, and an extraordinary guitar style. A joy to see.”

For the past several years Peter has done an annual fall tour entirely by bicycle, partly for environmental reasons and partly for the sheer fun of continuing his creative, unorthodox approach to a long and fruitful career as an artist.

Brianna Lane is a gifted singer/songwriter in true Americana form. She writes and performs on an acoustic guitar as well as a banjo, crafting songs that are clear-eyed and pure—with an integrity derived from her gritty, unflinching emotional honesty.

“Brianna Lane is a star in the making…poised, ambitious, a soul-singer of the first order, and an accomplished guitarist.” (Jim Walsh, Star Tribune/WalshPages Minneapolis)

Ryan Montbleau has been described as something of a Martin Sexton by
way of Van Morrison and Stevie Wonder. Yet Ryan Montbleau Band’s music
is difficult to pigeon-hole or neatly categorize. It is original yet familiar—a
fresh sound full of firmly-rooted ingredients, including Americana, folk,
blues, ragtime and ’70’s R&B and soul. Whereas the band’s intriguing
instrumentation and arrangements (not to mention top notch chops) help to
create this unique sound, all is firmly anchored by Montbleau’s water-tight
lyrics and unmistakable voice.

Jason Spooner, a multi-award winning New England-based acoustic folk rock singer/songwriter opens the show.

Who: E-Craft / Detune-X / vs. / Cervello Elettronico
When: Mon. October 4 8:00PM
Cost: cover TBD
Additional Info: 21 and up.

E-Craft is a German aggrotech/electro-industrial band. Borrowing some elements from noise, their music is often more aggressive and hard hitting than other bands in the same genre (e.g. dark, harsh electro music and EBM acts like Tactical Sekt, Hocico, Combichrist, Panzer AG, Tumor, Psyclon Nine, Tyske Ludder, Alien Vampires, Cyborg Attack, X-Fusion, Noisuf-X, Supreme Court, Feindflug and more).

Detune-X began as a solo side project of Stefano Rossello back in 2004. Nowadays, Detune-X has become a duo project made by Stefano Rossello and Eric Van Wonterghem. They produce pure rhythmic noise and full-steam-ahead distorted bass drums battle together to attack us with a devastatingly powerful sonic impact, forcing our bodies into movement and testing the limits of our eardrums.

Influenced by 80s Industrial and 90s Electronica, Cervello Elettronico's inception in 2001 contributed to a new underground scene growing in the New York City area. Several demos and self released EPs were sold and openly distributed throughout the internet before the the act landed it's first live show supporting Manufactura and Terrorfakt in the spring of 2004 at NYC's legendary Albion night.

Who: Lost Beard Benefit / Knuckel Drager / Brass Tacks / The Skintones / Droids Attack
When: Sun. October 10 4:00PM
Cost: $7 cover
Additional Info: 21 and up. The $7 Cover Is A Suggested Donation

Knuckel Drager is a rock band from Madison that mixes surf, garage, and metal.

At times, Brass Tacks spit out some good AC/DC type rock'n' roll with a punk edge. Other times tehy have an aggressive Vulture-Rock-type thing going on. Lyrically speaking, there's nothing out of the norm for the genre, but they have lots of attitude.

When The Skintones formed in '98, the main goal was simply to get together and have a good time. But lo and behold, their punk-metal, "eclectically pleasing" sound caught on and they developed a devoted following and accolades from fans and bands alike. The members all bring something substantial to the table. Especially vocals, they make sure that everyone adds into the music. Levity is the glue that holds their creative minds together.

Blazing guitar riffs, thick low end, and highly imaginative rhythmic structures make up the foundation of this stoner rock outfit from Madison, WI. Brandishing a full bodied tone and a taught signature style that slices through the sterile ceiling fan churn of our modern day Line 6 heroes like a kershaw through the warm neck flesh of a thousand infidels, the Droid's approach suggests a more natural progression between Black Sabbath and Tool, and their throw down approach to the stage has consistantly lead the most scouling of metal heads to the front row beeming with delight. It is fun to have your ass kicked this good.

”Call Me Lightning of Milwaukee are everything you want in a heavy punk-rock band: they’re urgent, the songs are driving, they’ve got great riffs, and their frontman exudes brilliant personality.” (Drowned In Sound)

Family Four Pack for $50 Available at http://trueendeavorsblog.com/ -- Babes In Arms Free

Singer/songwriter and former Bad Examples leader Ralph Covert is also the brains, guitar, and voice behind Ralph's World, where he crafts fun, unique songs that have equal appeal for kids and their parents. Covert began writing songs for children shortly after the birth of his own daughter, Fiona; around that time, he was also teaching a music class aimed at young children at Chicago's Old Town School of Folk Music. Called "Wiggle Worms," the class spanned traditional kids' music and rock, ranging from "The Itsy Bitsy Spider" to "Ziggy Stardust." In 2000, Minty Fresh label founder Jim Powers approached him to record an album of children's music, and the first, self-titled Ralph's World album -- which featured several members of the Bad Examples, as well as other veteran Chicago players -- arrived in 2001. Musically, Ralph's World is as diverse as the "Wiggle Worms" classes were, embracing folk, country, pop, and rock. Albums such as Peggy's Pie Parlor, Amazing Adventures of Kid Astro, Holly Jolly Ralph's World and Green Gorilla, Monster & Me ensured a growing audience of the young and young at heart.

Irish music and rock raising their glasses with cheerful abandon.

The band's latest album "Gutter Anthems" is a combination of rousing drinking songs with well-arranged rock and
pop tunes. Songs like opening track “The Litter And The Leaves” with its upbeat tempo and rousing anthemic chorus
see the band embracing a jig-punk direction ala The Dropkick Murphys, while tracks like “Did you Call Me Albatross?”
embrace the more traditional feel of tin whistle and fiddle throughout. “Noseworthy and Piercy” and “The Death of
Johnny Mooring” find the band embracing its Canadian roots in true tales from the homeland.
